March 7, 2012 proposed BLM closures and how you can help ATV Club discussed By Joanne Winer On February 20, a special meeting was held hosted by the Arizona SunRiders ATV Club to discuss proposed closures of some of the trails in this area by the BLM. Over a hundred concerned ATVers attended the meeting, held at the Senior Citizens Center. Presi- dent of the club Richard McGill moderated the open discussion of the meeting, first speaking about the proposed closures and then opening the discussion for any ideas and comments. The SunRiders ATV Club, formed several years ago to promote ATVing and helping to create a trail system throughout the county, including Quartzsite areas, has been working for the past year with all the officials of any government entities in the county, state and federal levels to endeavor to create a map showing ATVers where they could ride. They have received support from all the entities they have ap- proached, and they did a lot of work getting ready to create a map of the system they wanted to see put into place. BLM had a meeting with them and wanted to make some changes to the maps they pro- posed, and also stated intentions of closing some of the trails they had wanted left open due to environ- mental and wildlife concerns. The purpose of the meeting was to inform everyone anyone who wants to have their voice heard should contact their officials on the county, state, or federal levels. It is hoped that with contin- ued dialogue and lots of input from those who want to be able to use the trails, that some solution would be forthcoming that would be to everyone's benefit. In making his announcement, Suazo said "Roxie Trost brings vast experience, an enthusiastic attitude, and a can-do spirit to the Colorado River District. We are lucky to have her in Arizona and look forward to her leadership and management of the District's significant natural and cultural resources." As the Colorado River District Manager, Trost will oversee the Yuma, Kingman, and Lake Havasu Field offices. For the last eight years, Trost has served as the BLM Barstow Field Manager in California. She has also served in several key supervisory positions, including as a resource management specialist and outdoor recreation planner in both the BLM Cali- fornia Barstow and El Centro Field offices. Her ex- perience in California has prepared her well for a multitude of resource issues in the Colorado River District, especially managing a large and challenging recreation program. "Trost's range of experience, innovative manage- ment skills, ability to lead change, resolve difficult issues, and build partnerships make her an excellent choice for the BLM Colorado River District manag- er," Suazo said. "I am truly honored and humbled to have the op- portunity to manage the outstanding BLM employ- ees and diverse resource programs in the Colorado River District," Trost said. "I enjoy working with people from all backgrounds and managing public lands and natural resources. I am looking forward to this exciting opportunity." Roxie replaces Angie Lara, who has taken a posi- tion in the BLM California State Office as the Associ- ate State Director. Trost will begin serving as Dis- trict Manager in late April to early May. The BLM manages more land – 245 million acres – than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western States, including Alaska. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activi- ties as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by con- serving natural, historical, cultural, and other re- sources on public lands.
