March 7, 2012 LOCALLY: Part of the La Paz County land fill is ten 'cells' of used tires. These piles are surrounded by household type fire extinguishers fastened to fence posts. And these piles of used tires are huge. When we buy new tires, there is a disposal fee added to our bill for each tire we discard. The tire vendor collects the money and gives it to the state. The County land fill is required to take the used tires from the vendors and store them. As individuals we are allowed to deliver 5 used tires a year to our local landfill without any charge. The state distributes the collected disposal fees back to the counties. The county landfill then pays businesses who recycle the used tires to haul them away. These businesses grind the tires and remove the steel belt- ed parts. They make products from the ground rubber. They call this rubber crumb. They make and sell pellets for play- grounds. They make a product which Arizona Department of Transportation uses as a top coat for asphalt on paving jobs. Individuals find many uses for used tires.... tire swings, sand boxes, garden and driveway borders, tomato, potato and zucchini planters, raised garden beds, weights for tarps over si- lage, playground equipment, alternative mate- rial for home construction, cattle feeding con- tainers. The uses for used tires are limited only by our imagination. www.DesertMessenger.com Paperglassaluminumtinplastic TIME NEEDED TO DECOMPOSE MATERIALS Cigarette butts/1-5 years..... HERO: While shopping in the Prescott Valley Good Will store, I learned Good Will recycled 350 million pounds of stuff last year. WINNERS: Days Inn Motels because they dye their stained white wash clothes lavender and requests that guests use these to do the little jobs which might stain the white wash clothes. Two local artists because they gather weathered glass and rusted metal and cre- ate yard art which moves and sounds wonderful in the wind. The winter visi- tors because they anchor their outdoor carpets with tin can or fruit jar lids. The gardener be- cause she used gallon tin cans for containers and broken plastic venetian blinds to label the plants before they sprout. The RV club house crafters because they make fans for the hot weather from tongue depressors and sympa- thy cards with a little glue. Thank you all! If we don't recycle we are throwing it all away.
