Page 30 www.DesertMessenger.com March 7, 2012 Lots of Golf in the beautiful Sonoran desert RAINBOW ACRES SCRAMBLE #4 15th Quartzsite Masters Golf Tournament Quartzsite, Arizona - Tournament director, Dennis Dole, said "we had another gorgeous day and fantastic turnout for this year's tournament". Nearly 100 golfers played in this year's Quartzsite Masters on Saturday, Feb- ruary 18. The tournament was the 15th annual golf event sponsored by the Quartzsite VFW 769. Men and women played their 18 holes in the morning or afternoon with a delicious hamburger fry with all the trimmings served by the VFW post 769. All eyes were on the scoreboard as scores were posted as the foursomes finished. Our green jacket masters this year were Russell Leininger who shot the low score of 39 for the day and Kim Williams who fired a 46 to lead the women. Top finishers for the women 55 and un- der were Gesche Nankivell at 49, Anna Zumwalt 54, and Lori Sutinen 61. Women 56-65 were led by Val Norell at 50, Linda Taylor 53 and Jayne Cole- man 55. Leaders in the women 66 and over were LeeRaye Christner at 48, Veltus Champ 53, and Lupe Mangana 54. Men 56-65 were led by Bob Nankivell at 41, Dino Linden 44, and Bud Key 45. Leaders in the men 66 and over were Robert Dixon at 40, Allen Bork, Dave Larson, Cletus Winkler, Tom McLeroy, Joe McWilliams and Gene Thompson with 44's. A big "thank you" to all the par- ticipants, organizers, and donors for making this such a special time year after year. "Oh, what a beautiful morn- ing" we had to play our most recent tournament. Twenty- two players enjoyed a round of golf again in close com- petition. The winning team of Russ Leininger and Gene Swallow fired a low gross score of 38, while Deano Lin- den and Gary McGowan were in close pursuit firing a 39 and earned 2nd place. Two teams tied with scores of 40 and in a sudden death play- off, the team of Kit Wilkins and Bill Buchan earned 3rd place and teammates Curtis Winkler and Norm Durant finished in 4th place. For the final 5th place finish, three teams tied with 41. In that sudden death chipoff, the team of Bill Toner and Dwayne Farmer defeated George Lische and Bud Key as well as Harvey Gibson and Robert Barnard. In the long drive contest, Cletus Winkler won for men and Linda Taylor won for the women. There were 3 holes-in-one on the men's side on the closest to the pin hole. The winners were Dwayne Farmer, Gene Swallow, and Cletus Winkler. Not pictured Dwayne Farmer and Linda Taylor RAINBOW ACRES GOLF TOURNAMENT # 5 On the nicest, warmest day we have had for our tournament this year, we had a record turnout of 30 participants. In the 2-person scramble, scores were close as usual. First place team was Robert Dixon and Bud Key who shot a 36 on the par 56 desert course. There was a 2-way tie for second place with scores of 38 between Harry Walster & Gene Swallow and Russ Leininger & George Lische. We had a 3 -way tie for 4th place with scores of 40 from Gary Mc- Gowan & Linda Taylor, Robert "Skinny" Barnard & John Fulmer, and Lee Christner & Harvey Gibson. Dennis Dole won the men's long drive contest by hitting the longest drive of the year. LeeRaye Christner had the women's long drive of the day. Women's closest to the pin winner was Linda Taylor. In the men's closest to the pin, there were 3 holes in one. Those aces were shot by Robert Dixon, Gene Swallow, & Gary McGowan. Our final tourna- ment of the season will be held Thursday,March 8. Signup starts at 9:00 and teeoff will be at 10:00. Entry fee is $6 and partners are chosen in a blind draw. Hope to see the largest turnout of the season on the 8th!
