March 7, 2012 CANDIDATES FROM PAGE 28 cilman. Doesn't it make sense to appoint someone for a two-year term who's famil- iar with the day-to-day processes of vari- ous types of legislation? Within the next five years, I believe we will finally have a Community Center, an Animal Shelter, new businesses designed around a growing population of ATV/RV visitors, an Airport offering good paying jobs, and many light industry start-ups. The housing shortage should improve with the influx of workers and new residents. I would even go so far to say the Snack Shack will be completed. DEAN TAYLOR Address: at my home, which is paid for and so are my property taxes. 6 years at that address, but I haven't a clue how this is pertinent to the election. I have never been an illegal resident, what are you insinuating? I became a registered voter in 2004. No, I am not a party to any legal action against the town. Have you ever been arrested? No, have you? College: I am a board certified Hearing Specialist. I am retired. I was tired yesterday and I'm tired again today. I manage a busy RV park and at every opportunity I try and promote the town. 1) I was an Open Ocean Sea Captain in Alaska. I have a good record for safety, and I can both give and follow orders. I never once abandoned my ship during "rough weather". 2) We need to better promote the posi- tive aspects of our town, the near perfect weather. We need a booth and physical presence at the State Fair as well as other high profile events. 3) Not near as much as I would have liked to have done. Numerous times I have vol- unteered to serve on various municipal boards, however I was never selected by the council and at one point a previous council member called me "a criminal". If the council won't allow me to serve the town, maybe the voters will. 4) We must elect leaders that understand budgets, fiscal responsibility, and most of all our elected officials need to understand who they serve. With that foundation, many things are possible. 5) When I first arrived in Quartzsite in 1988, I found nothing but fun, friendliness, www.DesertMessenger.com and endless opportunity. While the town has grown and many things have changed since then, we need to return to a less op- pressive atmosphere. While we do need rules and regulations, we should be business and visitor friendly. If elected, I will devote my considerable spare time to involve the community in promoting our town. PATRICIA WORKMAN I am a resident of Quartzsite, for almost 12 years now. I use to live at 145 N. Moon Mt. Road until I moved across the street. Old address almost 12 years. New address almost a month. I'm not sure what you consider "legal", there is more than one way to look at it. I am not a party to any legal action against the Town of Quartzsite. Should I be? Do you know something I don't? Arrested? No, and what does this have to do with running for Town Council? You and the current Town Administration should clean skeletons out of your own closets before questioning honest and fair people who are just trying to help our community. I am a high school graduate. That's more than former Mayor Wes Huntley can say. Are you against people that are not college graduates running for office? 1) I had my own trucking company, did my own bookkeeping, and did taxes for all states that I operated in. I was also an RV park manager for 6 years where I did the books, banking, read the meters, as well as 70 storage units, until I quit. I was not ter- minated like you published. 2) We need someone doing marketing and public relations for the town at least a couple days a month. 3) I may not have painted any rocks, but I attended events and I did help the Officers who really served this community before they were wrongfully fired. 4) A town with an animal shelter that pays its bills, instead of remodeling the town at- torney's office or having to rent out public works' equipment. 5) One with activities for all ages. How about mini golf or the community center and pool we were promised. Where are the QAC funds that were raised for that, Alex? Special Election COUNCIL CANDIDATES CHOOSE ONE MIKE JEWITT I've lived on Mockingbird St for the past 3 years 9 months. How long have you been a legal resident of Quartzsite? Since August 2007 Are you a party to any legal action against the Town of Quartzsite? No Have you been arrested in the past two years? No Education: H.S. Diploma plus some col- lege credits. Employer:Retired from Northwest Air- lines after 36 yrs. including supervisory and management 1) As part of a team I helped manage an office of over 400 employees. I was respon- sible for setting and adhering to a budget. 2) Make the town more visually attractive to the tourist. Encourage more permanent businesses and to work with the vendor community. 3) The six months since I was sworn in have been a learning period. I have attend- ed the annual conference of the League of Arizona Cities and Towns, a very good, in depth training session. I have attended all council meetings except two in person. Those two I attended telephonically. I have attended every work session as well as an advisory committee meeting. 4) There are two primary issues; first is to maintain a balanced budget while paying down the debt to the HURF account. A sec- ond is to get the water and sewer utility on a self-sustaining, pay as you go basis. We should not need to support this utility from the general fund. 5) I would like to see a family oriented rec- reation facility with both a swimming pool and a wading pool. We need such a facility if we are to attract and keep young families here. With such facilities we would be able to attract light industry to our town. I would also like to see an airport close to Quartzsite to attract the "upper scale" tourist as well as some aviation based businesses. JOHN PRUTCH What significant factor contributed to you filing as a write-in candidate? My belief that there should always be choice for vot- ers, especially when the seat was appoint- ed to fill a vacancy. When I filed for the papers I requested my signature sheets and was told by the Town Clerk that Write In candidates do not have to secure signatures. Have been a resident of Quartzsite since 1990 have lived at 375 E.Main since 1992. No lawsuits or arrests anywhere. Education; 2 yrs. Jr college business man- agement, 6 years Naval electrical and elec- tronics school and Industrial apprentice- ship resulting in Journeyman rating. Employer:Retired 1) My background and training that quali- fies me to sit on town council comes from my time working in heavy industry man- aging large jobs and projects; owning and running three successful businesses. After coming to Quartzsite, I worked for the Town in a number of positions including 3.5 years as Town Manager. During that time, prop- erty and funding was acquired for the sewer and water systems, present day Town Hall, Library and Public Works buildings, com- pleting all projects; managed town budgets and when I left Town service there was a surplus of funds in the bank. 2) One of my goals would be to help create an atmosphere that is business friendly, by having town staff do all it can to encour- age anyone who wants to start a business, working closely with the chamber and oth- er organizations to achieve this goal. 3) I have been on the governing board of the Quartzsite Fire District this past year and previous 20 years this is a very positive part of the community that I am extremely proud to be part of. 4) I believe that if we work for a more transparent government where all of the community is informed on the people's business, they will work together in the best interest of Quartzsite. What's good for Quartzsite is good for all of us. 5) Five years from now I would like to see medical facilities for everyone, have more business in town that will attract younger families to live and raise there children with this will come more housing and services.
