December 21, 2011 MINING FROM PAGE 8 By 1869 many of the miners were abandoning Farrar Gulch for new gold strikes. Trinidad stayed on with a dream that he too would find a fist-sized gold nugget. Instead he struck something almost as good as gold. At 30 feet down in his mine shaft, a wonderful supply of water started flowing in. The delicious drinking water from the Gonzales Well supplied the area for years and was a well- known landmark. Trinidad built that little house that can be seen just up the canyon from I-10. Years ago the well was filled in with rock and sand to keep people and animals from falling in. When the search for gold nuggets started resulting in finding gold dust, Trinidad and his son Felipe decided there might be a more reliable source of income in hauling and selling water to other miners in the La Paz District.
