December 21, 2011 Former QPD officer's case dismissed Former Quartzsite Police officer Wil- liam Ponce filed a complaint with the Arizona State Personnel Board regard- ing alleged prohibited personnel prac- tice of the Town of Quartzsite. According to court documents, on December 14th, the board granted the town's motion to dismiss the case, Ponce's appeal was dismissed for lack of jurisdiction, and Ponce is to receive no relief from the town. Mr. Ponce was one of the officers re- leased from duty with Quartzsite Po- lice Department this summer. At that time, he was the president of Quartz- site Police Officers Assoc.(QPOA) in which 9 officers voted a of "no confi- dence" in QPD Chief Gilbert's leader- ship. According to Chief Gilbert, the QPOA is no longer in existance. County Attorney Press Release On December 8th, 2011, a La Paz County jury convicted Karen Denice Herrin, 57, of Quartzsite, AZ, of Re- sisting Arrest. Herrin faces a maximum of two years Woman convicted of resisting arrest in the Arizona Department of Correc- tions. Herrin was tried in La Paz Coun- ty Superior Court with Judge Michael Burke presiding and was acquitted of assaulting the police officer. Herrin was a suspect in a criminal damage investigation at an RV Park in Quartzsite, AZ on August 17, 2010. When an officer went to her residence to question her about the criminal dam- age complaint, Herrin became uncoop- erative and began to fight with the offi- cer when he attempted to arrest her. La Paz County Attorney Sam Vederman prosecuted the case and the case was in- vestigated by Officer Ruben Villafana of the Quartzsite Police Department.
