December 21, 2011 Submitted by Dottie Palmer STEP THREE: is establishing the re- cycling habit. Conventional wisdom says if we repeat an activity 21 con- secutive days we have established the habit. Three weeks of deliberate recy- cling will establish our new habit. Will Bowen, a Kansas City minister, wrote the book; A Complaint Free World in 2007 ISBN 978-0-385- 52458-2. He gave his congregation and us the 21 day chal- lenge. No complaining, criticizing or gossipingfor 21 days. He teaches us to move a purple rubber band from one wrist to the other every time we complain. This takes the average person 4 to 8 months. Fortunately, it is much easier to establish a recycling habit. LOCALLY: Let's establish recycling habits here, in private homes, busi- nesses, restaurants, schools, churches and gathering places. Let's sell the bot- tles and cans and recycle the rest. HERO: Andy Keller or the Bag Mon- ster with his Bag Monster Blog wears a jump suit with 500 plastic bags at- tached. 500 is the number of plastic bags the average American throws away each year. On his blog he tracks places like Portland, Oregon and www.DesertMessenger.com Paperglassaluminumtinplastic Marin County which have banned plastic bags. He is so successful in rais- ing awareness that he has been sued by three plastic bag manufacturers for "irreparable harm" to their business. He'll be featured in Oprah's "Live Your Best Life" in the January 2012 issue of O Magazine. WEBSITE: A complaint Free World.org YOU: are invited to submit your creative recycling story with permission to publish your name. Each edi- tion we will select one to inspire the rest of us. WINNER: Judie wins for her idea of sewing a full size burlap archery target and stuffing it with used plastic bags. The bags hold the arrows very well. Thank You. If we don't recycle it we are throwing it all away. Dottie Palmer didwash@gmail.com Desert Messenger @DesertMessenger Headhunters II "The Best Little Hairhouse" in Quartzsite!
