December 21, 2011 an update on the status of a proposed 2,000 feet tall solar tower from Envi- roMission's Christopher Davey, Busi- ness Development Manager, and Rog- er Davey, CEO of Phoenix. The tower would be built between Quartzsite and Parker off State Route 95. The project has been started by the Australian company EnviroMission, which says it hopes, by the time it is finished construction in early 2015, to provide enough electricity to power the equivalent of 150,00 homes. It would burn no fuel, have no emis- sions, and use no water to create elec- tricity. Nothing quite like it has ever been tried in America before. Its design consists of a giant, round greenhouse-like structure, under which air would become trapped and get very hot -- around 160 de- grees Fahrenheit. Hot air would pass through any of 32 turbines, whose turning blades would run generators and create electricity. The company estimates the plant will employ approximately 1,500 people www.DesertMessenger.com EnviroMission's solar tower update La Paz County Supervisors were given while its under construction, and 40 once it's completed. Davey said the project was proceed- ing forward, and they hope to break ground late in 2012. However, an envi- ronmental study still needs to be done, and formal hearings on the project as part of the permit process. This is the first U.S. project. Enviro- Mission built a small test project in Spain. The proposed finished tower would be the second-tallest structure on the planet, just a hundred feet shorter than the Burj Khalifa luxury skyscraper in Dubai. It would be twice as tall as New York's Empire State Building. Supporters say the view from the top on a clear day would be stupendous, while enviromentalist advocates are concerned that it might affect migrat- ing birds and local wildlife.
