December 21, 2011 Meet AWC Instructor Mark Goldberg Quartzsite - After 30+ years work- ing as a City Planner for the cities of San Dimas, California and Hemet, California, Mark Goldberg retired and now happily devotes time to his many hobbies which previously had taken a "back seat" to work and volunteer commitments. Mark has always en- joyed teaching and creative endeavors and likes working with his hands with a wide variety of materials and media. His educational background includes an Associate De- gree in Engineering/Ar- chitecture and a Bachelor Degree in Urban Planning with a minor in Art. He is the founding president of the Hemet Library Foun- dation, a past president (2008) of the Hemet Val- ley Art Association, and a member of the Quartzsite Art Guild. Mark's numerous hobbies and talents include: photography, astronomy, computer graphics, watercolor/acryl- ic/oil painting, sketching, mechani- cal drawing, lapidary, silver and gold jewelry fabrication and casting, wood- working, ceramics, upholstery, leaded glass, resins, gourd carving and deco- rating, kite fabrication and flying. He is also musically inclined and enjoys playing the ukulele, banjo, keyboard, 8-string guitar, autoharp, Q-Chord, Theremin, and hammer and dulcimer. This is Mark's second season as an associate instructor with the Arizona Western College Quartzsite Learning Center (AWC). He is offering sev- eral unique and fun Life Enrichment classes beginning in January. Each class has four meetings. Wonders of the Night Sky is for those of you who have sat in your lawn chair and looked up at the myriad of stars here in the clear desert skies at night and won- dered what you were looking at. You www.DesertMessenger.com will find out and be able to identify constellation and other sky objects to impress your friends at the campfire. Instruction will include some lecture, as well as field trips to view the night sky with the naked eye, binoculars, and a computer-guided telescope. This class starts January 9th, Mon- days, 7-9 p.m.; or January 11th, Wednesdays, 7-9 p.m. Oil Painting, for any skill level, covers the basics of oil painting including composi- tion, color, and techniques. Students bring their own mate- rials. The class starts January 12th, Thurs- days, 6-9:30 p.m. Art Lab provides the time which you never seem to set aside, to work on your art projects of any type… with expert, indi- vidual advice and assis- tance, available at your request! The class begins Janu- ary 9th, Mondays, 9- 11 a.m. Beginning Wood Carving is a chance for you to try wood carving through instruction on several simple, hands-on projects. Basic techniques, tools, and layout will be taught. Some simple tools are required. Wood carv- ing starts January 11th, Wednesdays, 9-11 a.m. These and other life enrichment courses offered at the Arizona Western College Quartzsite Learning Center are casual, short courses designed for your Handyman!!
