A DESERT HIKING HANDBOOK BY AWC STUDENTS Now Available in Campus Bookstore: A Desert Hiking Handbook Book Written by AWC Honors Students Yuma, AZ —Let’s Take a Walk: Refl ec- tions from AWC Honors Students…A Desert Hiking Handbook, written and put together by the AWC Honors Pro- gram/Phi Theta Kappa, is now avail- able for purchase in the AWC Barnes & Noble Bookstore. The book is a col- lection of research from thirteen Hon- ors students that took the course HON 297-Honors Desert Hiking in the fall of 2009. The students accepted the in- vitation to explore their desert home and from that a complete step-by-step hiking guide was created for seven hikes within Yuma County. Over the seventeen week course, the students collaboratively researched chosen topics of general interest to prepare for their hikes and quests. Teams of students gathered data dur- ing the hike/event with photographs, GPS (global positioning system) and personal accounts. Student teams then submitted research and docu- mentation at the close of the semes- ter resulting in awardment of college credit. Two of the thirteen Honors students, Petronella Newhard and Tif- fany Mullennix, edited the content as an Honors Capstone Project. cludes a hike to the Airplane B-17 Crash of June 1944 in the Gila Moun- tains. The hiker will be given basic information about the hike that will include the distance, duration, eleva- tion, level of diffi culty, amenities and history about the area. There are also complete directions and maps on how to get to the hiking site, along with a photo guide for the actual hike. Each hike is then followed by the students’ personal accounts. There were many people that made One example in the handbook in- WANT A CAPTIVE AUDIENCE? signifi cant contributions to the book and supported the AWC Honors Pro- gram/Phi Theta Kappa along the way. Some of the contributors include: Elizabeth Renaud (Professor of Early Childhood Education and Honors Di- rector, Hiking Instructor and super- visor for the book), George Monto- poli (Professor of Mathematics, hiking instructor and creator of maps and geographical info), Michael Oliveros (Graphics Designer with College Pub- lications), and Barbara Belobaba (Pro- fessor of English/Journalism, editor). The book is available in the AWC Bookstore for $25 and proceeds from the book will be used to fund the PTK/ Honors Leadership Award and to rec- ognize Honors Faculty. GOT YOU COVERED!
