Agents assigned to Blythe Station re- ceived an anonymous tip that a vehicle carrying narcotics would be passing through the Border Patrol checkpoint on Highway 95 south of Quartzsite, Ariz. A vehicle matching the descrip- tion approached the checkpoint and was referred for a secondary inspec- tion following a canine team positive alert. During the secondary inspec- tion, Border Patrol agents found pack- ages of cocaine wrapped in duct tape under the rear seat cushion and in the rear door panels. The cocaine has an estimated street value of $537,600. The driver, vehicle, and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. In a second incident, agents seized 81 pounds of marijuana near Blythe, Ca- lif., on Highway 78 at Mile Marker 66. Border Patrol agents stopped a vehicle after observing the driver’s suspicious and erratic behavior. A canine team was called to the scene and performed an exterior sniff of the vehicle resulting in a positive alert. During the inspec- tion of the vehicle, agents discovered the marijuana bundles. The narcot- ics had an estimated street value of $64,800. The case was turned over to the Riverside County Sherriff’s Task Force in California. The third incident occurred on Inter- state 8, west of Gila Bend when agents assigned to the Wellton Station seized approximately 218 pounds of mari- juana. Agents located fi ve makeshift backpacks containing marijuana while searching an area known to be a hid- ing spot for illegal aliens. The mari- juana, with an estimated street value of $174,560, was seized. As actionable intelligence indicates that there may be a shift in smuggling activity, the Border Patrol regularly adapts and shifts resources to miti- P 27 gate the threat. In the coming months, DHS will continue to deploy addition- al resources to the Southwest border, including two new forward operating bases to improve coordination of bor- der activities, improved tactical com- munications systems and 1,000 new Border Patrol Agents, funded through the Emergency Supplemental for Bor- der Security passed and signed into law in August 2010. To report suspicious activity, contact the Yuma Sector Border Patrol’s toll free telephone number at 1-866-999-8727.
