M 2, 2011 Amy Bjelland, State of Arizona Elec- tion Director, presented a voter educa- tion program on February 16th at the QIA. There were many questions raised about residency requirements, voting identifi cation, vehicle registration, and the privilege of voting in Arizona. “If you’re going to take advantage of the privilege to vote in Arizona, there are obligations the voter is required to do,” said Bjelland. “There are burdens that go along with voting, such as you are required to register your vehicle immediately.” A person who registers to vote is also required to pay Arizona income tax. Bjelland explained that MVD main- tains an online website to make com- plaints about vehicle registrations. MVD will investigate all complaints. Arizona participates in a cross-state match of voter registration records with 14 other states, which has grown over the past year. The purpose is keeping rolls current and also for the enforce- ment against people who vote in two jurisdictions in the same election. If a person goes to another state with the intent of making it his present res- idence, he loses Arizona residency. If you are a group infl uencing an elec- tion, such as holding fundraisers and raising funds, you are required to form a committee and fi le with the elections offi cers. Voting in Quartzsite will take place on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. Polling places will open Tuesday at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Any voter already in line at that time will be able to cast a ballot. All ballots (including mail-ins) must be received by the close of polls Tuesday. Post-mark dates don’t matter. Recycle your empty inket cartridges and used cell phones! The voter must provide: • one piece of ID that bears his/her name, address and photograph (Ex: An Arizona driver’s license), or • two forms of ID that bear his/her name and address (Ex: a utility bill and bank statement), or • one form of acceptable photo ID with another form of non-photo ID that in- cludes his/her name and address (Ex: a passport and utility bill). “Local politics is like your local con- tact sport!” The privilege of voting is a constitutional issue and one that should be taken seriously. The pen- alty for false registration is a Class 6 Felony. “People need to take personal responsibility” said Bjelland, when it comes to voting.
