Groundbreaking Held for Rowan Skateboard Park A groundbreaking for the Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation Skateboard Park was held July 13 at Rowan Park. The Skateboard Park is funded by approximately $1 million from a bond referendum passed in 2016 by citizens to pay for parks and recreation enhancements and improvements. Park construction will begin soon after the groundbreaking and the venue is scheduled to open in late fall. Team Pain Skate Park Design & Construction of Winter Springs, Fla. was selected as the design- build team leader for the park. Team Pain is skater-owned and for over 30 years has created custom skate parks and skate structures for municipal and government agencies, communities, the private sector, production companies for motion picture and televised events and professional skateboarders and BMX riders. The Skateboard Park is a great welcome addition for skateboard enthusiasts as it provides a safer place for them to perfect their hobby. The park also represents progress with park bond projects. Bond money has already paid for multiple new splash pads, a play area in Segra Stadium, existing park upgrades and the construction of a new senior center in west Fayetteville. Leaders Wanted - Sign Up for Fayetteville Citizens Academy The next Fayetteville Citizens Academy class is being held on Wednesday, Aug. 14, starting at Kiwanis Recreation Center, located at 352 Devers St., just off Fort Bragg Road. Class begins at 8:15 a.m. and features Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation and tours of the Prince Charles Hotel and new Hay Street Parking Deck with the Development Services Department. Applicants must be City of Fayetteville residents, or work in Fayetteville city limits, and the class size is limited to 25 residents. This session will conclude at or before 5 p.m. To apply, log onto www.fayettevillenc.gov/citizensacademy, scroll to the bottom of the page and download the application, fill out the application and email it to Nathan Walls at nwalls@ci.fay.nc.us. The application window closes Thursday, Aug. 8 and applicants will be notified of their acceptance by close of business on Friday, Aug. 9. Residents will interact with staff of both departments and engage in hands-on learning activities that familiarize them with the functions of the departments. Lunch will be provided and residents are asked to dress appropriately for the weather in business casual attire and in closed-toe shoes. Citizens should also bring sunscreen and wear hats. There will be some walking involved. Students will also be filmed by Corporate Communications staff, who will air footage of the class on FayTV and City social media webpages. As a reminder, this Citizens Academy class is a one-day session that allows for more residents to attend the quarterly sessions. This format differs from the previous seven-week nightly Citizens Academy held in years past where residents attended all sessions.
