JULY 31-AUGUST 6, 2019 UCW 9 Best of Fayetteville Best Live Theatre Cape Fear Regional Theatre 1209 Hay St. 910-323-4233 or www.cfrt.org Cape Fear Regional Theatre blends local and national talent to bring Broadway-quality performances to town. This downtown treasure has been a mainstay of Fayetteville's cultural life for almost 60 years, deliv- ering solid entertainment with a dose of power- fully relevant social issues mixed in. Under the capable guidance of Artistic Director Mary Kate Burke, the 2018- 19 season was no exception. From the original country music score of season opener "Music City" to the madcap adventures of "Peter & the Starcatcher" to the rollicking show tunes of "Annie" to the 1950s-era R&B of "Memphis," CFRT's musical presentations hit a high note. Dramatically departing from the lush staging of the musicals, CFRT's "Trumbo" dealt with congressional power run amok, and "The Cake" tackled intolerance with a touch of humor and a dash of Southern charm. "Mama Mia!" is scheduled to open the 2019-20 season. Following that are "No Child," "Shrek: The Musical," "Murder For Two," "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night," and season closer "Jelly's Last Jam." As always, CFRT's shows will continue to highlight national, regional and local talent. Every year, CFRT collaborates with local merchants and breweries to pres- ent its Blues-N-Brews fundraiser in Festival Park. This year's event, which took place June 8, was Beach Party themed. CFRT's community outreach projects also include summer camps for children and teens, discussion nights preceding performances, a military outreach program, and sensory- friendly performances for children with special needs. Best Local Actor/Actress Lanie Jo Myrtle Fayetteville's favorite actress this year is 11-year-old triple threat Lanie Jo Myrtle. Myrtle, who will start sixth grade at John Griffin Middle School this fall, has acted on-stage for seven years. She also sings and dances. Her debut was as Toto, Dorothy's lovable dog, in Jack Britt High School's 2013 production of "The Wizard of Oz." Myrtle's most recent performance was this fall as a cast member in the music-driven "The Heart of Christmas Show." It was her third year joining the HOC cast. "I like that it makes me happy," Myrtle said of acting. "I like to act out all the different charac- ters and use my God-given talent. If I didn't use it, what's the use of having a talent?" At the time of this writing, Myrtle was prepar- ing to attend a national dance competition. She's been dancing since she was 2 and has been a member of the Elite Dance Center Competition Team since 2013. She and Ava Grace Kinlaw took first place for their duet at the Dance Machine Nationals in 2017, and she helped win Lyrical Team First Place at the same competition that year. In response to her Best of Fayetteville win, Myrtle thanked her family, friends, HOC and several local mentors who have helped her along the way: Laura Stevens, Victoria Armstrong, Michelle Hurd, Katy Swain and Hillary Bogers.
