8 UCW JULY 31-AUGUST 6, 2019 Best of Fayetteville Best Local Nonprofit Organization Fayetteville Animal Protection Society 3927 Bragg Blvd. 910-864-9040 or www.fapspet.org For animal-lovers, relationships with pets bring some of life's greatest joys. Fayetteville Animal Protection Society believes all animals deserve safety, not just those lucky enough to already be in a loving home. FAPS is a no-kill nonprofit shelter for homeless animals to find refuge and care until an adop- tive family can be secured. FAPS also aims to reduce the population of stray animals and to promote responsible pet ownership. More than 90% of FAPS animals are saved from Cumberland County Animal Control. FAPS is thorough in its adoption pro- cedures, ensuring animals go to homes that will truly care for them. The pro- cess includes a mandatory meet-and- greet, where everyone in the household — both those with feet and those with paws — meet the pet. FAPS is the only Cumberland County no-kill, nonprofit animal shelter sup- ported by volunteers, grants and individual contributions. This means that its success directly depends on community support. Events like FAPS' annual Woofstock fundraiser help keep the doors open. Visit the website and click "Donate" or "Volunteer" to learn about other ways you can help, like donat- ing a few items off the Wish List, sponsoring a kennel or giving your time. Best Local Fundraising Event Cape Beard Pig Pickin' for Autism www.capebeardfof.com/pig-pickin-for-autism or https://www.facebook.com/cape.beard.9 Once again, Fayetteville's favorite local fundraiser award goes to the Pig Pickin' for Autism put on by Cape Beard: Follicles of Freedom, the local nonprofit beard and mustache club. Cape Beard has promoted the acco- lades of facial hair since 2011. The club has officially coined in 71 members with many diverse talents and interests. Soon after its inception, the club started hosting fun-filled events and supporting local causes, including the Karen Chandler Trust, the Autism Society of Cumberland County, KidsPeace, Chambers for Hope, Second Harvest Food Bank and others. To date, the club has raised $140,554 to help make Fayetteville and Cumberland County a better place to live. This year, Cape Beard's 8th Annual Pig Pickin' for Autism raised $12,300 for the Autism Society of Cumberland County. Thanks to 1,000 pounds of pork, live music, vendors, sponsors and the people of Fayetteville and Cumberland County, it was tons of fun. Cape Beard has raised $75,280 total for the ASCC. Cape Beard members are humbled that Fayetteville and Cumberland County have voted for them as a winner in this category three years in a row. C I TY l i fe Come Get Some!
