Two years later, it opened to the public with 135,000 books, 550 magazines and journals, 37 news- papers and a host of audiovisual items. In the years since, the service population of the library has skyrocketed, growing to 332,553. Patron visits more than quadrupled. The collection of print books has almost quadrupled as well, standing at 477,388. The number of computer sessions showed the biggest percentage jump of all, going from 2,119 within the library's first year of opera- tion to 870,512 in 2014-15. Regularly scheduled special events for the public include Cinema Chats, au- thor visits, NC Works job skills training for veterans, Library Geek Squad Drop-In Labs, book sales and even forums for Congressional District 9 candidates.
