OLLI at the University of Arkansas has been a participant for eight years, aff ording adult learners an oppor- tunity to explore foreign policy and op- tions facing our nation. This semester's Great Decisions program topics include: "The Role of International Organizations in a Global Pandemic, Global Supply Chains and National Security, China and Africa, Korean Peninsula, Persian Gulf Security, Brexit and the European Union, The Fight Over the Melting Arctic, and the End of Globalization?" Participants will receive a Briefi ng Book and a weekly discussion guide providing background information, current data and policy options for each topic. These all provide focus for the weekly discus- sion group. Limestone is soluble and porous and is abundant in the Ozarks of Arkansas. Participants will learn how limestone can cause sinkholes, some of which may be dangerous while others are not. Further discussion will center on caves and disappearing rivers and a few other relatable issues. Sequoyah, a thriving 400 acre haven was established in 1922 as a multi-state summer and spiritual re- treat via the Methodist Episcopal Church for its south jurisdiction. Originally called East Mountain it was renamed Mount Sequoyah in honor of Cherokee Chief Se- quoyah. The retreat opened its doors for the fi rst time during the summer of 1923. The unique history, including the devel- opment, spiritual focus, cultural aspect, important events and the impact it had on the Northwest Arkansas community will be shared. Ms. Gentry will also focus on what is currently happening and how participants can become involved in the organization's future. After the presentation there will be a campus tour of the spaces and buildings. Please wear comfortable shoes for walk- ing. Join us on this unique course that examines the ancient life of the Mississippian culture, 900A.D. to 1600 A.D., the arrival of Hernando de Soto, and the impact of the Spaniards on the lives of the indigenous people. The people were known as great traders and travel- ers. This course also studies the religion and practices of the early indigenous people as they were spiritual people be- lieving in the Sun God. Their shamans and priests held many rituals and ceremonies to bless special events. Pro- fessor Joel Gordon, a specialist in mod- ern Middle East research will present Mahfouz's novel, Midaq Alley. This story depicts life in a traditional quarter of Cairo during WWII and features a large array of colorful characters. In session 1, the instructor will introduce the author, historical setting and characters. During session 2, discussion will focus on the novel, its multiple themes, literary and wider social impact, including film and television adaptations. Participants need to purchase and read the first three chapters of the book be- fore the first class. INSTRUCTOR: Joel Gordon DAY/DATE: Tuesdays, 3/9/21 - 3/16/21 (2) TIME: 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM FORMAT: In person only LOCATION: Drake COST: $39 OLLI Member $54 Non-OLLI Member CHASING WATERFALLS: THE GLORY HOLE DESCRIPTION: Come enjoy the adven- ture and fun on this hike to one of the most unique waterfalls in the state: The Glory Hole. Arkansas is home to hundreds of natural fl owing waterfalls that come to life during the wet seasons. Flowing over tall bluff s, and in this case directly through one, they provide some of the most unique and scenic areas in the re- gion. On this full day outing, hikers will make the 1 mile descent down to Dismal Creek where it has drilled its way directly through an overhanging bluff , giving the waterfall its name. Plan to spend some time exploring the cascades leading to the falls as well as the rugged and scenic creek drainage below. Activity Level 5. Meeting location and information will be sent to participants in advance of the hike. While Louise Glück's work is well known in poetry circles, it is as yet little known by the American pub- lic. "Louise Glück is not only engaged by the errancies and shifting conditions of life," according to the Nobel's statement, "she is also a poet of radical change and rebirth, where the leap forward is made from a deep sense of loss." This course will provide an introduction to Glück's poetry through close study of her most recent book, Faithful and Virtu- ous Night (2014), winner of the National Book Award. Linda Leavell, the instruc- tor, is a scholar of American poetry and professor emerita from Oklahoma State University. She has been teaching OLLI classes for over a decade.
