A SHORT HISTORY OF IRELAND DESCRIPTION: In 2021 Ireland will cel- ebrate the hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Ireland. Eng- land had "conquered" Ireland almost nine centuries earlier, but the indomitable, stubborn Irish never accepted English rule.They struggled for freedom during the entire occupation. Jimmie Thomas, a doctor of medieval literature and avid visi- tor to and researcher of Ireland, will look at their many rebellions and guerrilla-like warfare. The participants will also spend time on the tragedy of the potato famine and the Easter Rising of April 1916. Erin go Bragh! Slavery was so profi table, it sprouted millionaires per capita. With cash crops of tobacco, cotton and sugar cane, America's southern states became the economic engine of the burgeoning nation. Slavery was condoned until the Civil War, but does it still exist today? Is slavery a problem? In 2000 the direct value of slave labor was estimated between thirteen and twenty billion dollars. "Estimates" put the number of modern slaves alive today at 27 million (this includes children). Some human rights organizations have the number as high as 200 million. How do you induce someone to work for you? Len White, a retired economics pro- fessor of the UofA will explain the diff erent degrees of slavery from the Bible through what is happening in our world today. Using live plant material, Jennifer Ogle, a botanist, will teach participants how to identify the most common invasive trees, shrubs, and woody vines growing in Northwest Arkan- sas. During the last hour of the class we will take a fi eld trip to a nearby site with most- ly fl at terrain to see how invasive plants are impacting a local forest ecosystem. While Dis- ney has made fairy tales family friendly, they actually have a much darker history. In this class, we'll start by reading classic fairy tales to learn more about their his- tory, then move on to modern stories that off er fresh twists on an old form. Finally, we'll wrap everything up by looking at the Disney-fi cation of fairy tales and how they've made these stories mainstream. All of the readings and viewings will be provided digitally. Come be invigorated by the engaging Ms. Cocciardi as she reveals new and little-known aspects of artist Leonar- do da Vinci's life, work, and his passion for interlocking knots. Enter Luca Pacioli, the famous Renaissance mathematician, who becomes Leonardo's apprentice and who plays a major role in his art masterpieces from The Last Supper to the Mona Lisa. Then there is Isabella d'Este, patron of the arts and hostess to Leonardo and Luca when, in 1499, fl eeing the perils of war, their Covid-19 moment, the men took refuge in her castle. The sojourn creates a sketch by Leonardo of Isabella with a promise to be followed by a 'color portrait' of the Marchesa. Dis- cover the intrigue of the relationships of the apprentice, the master and the Re- naissance woman and her unfi nished, un- painted portrait that will intertwine their lives forever. See unveiled the natural beauty of the state's most amazing topography nestled into unusual landscapes. Although renowned for amaz- ingly productive trout fi shing, participants will marvel at other aspects of the area's natural beauty. After learning the amaz- ing park history from a park interpreter, a two mile hike will provide enjoyment of the aesthetic Spring beauty of the Mis- souri Ozarks. Sandwiched into the day's enjoyment will be a get-acquainted pic- nic, compliments of OLLI. Time will also be allowed for perusal of the gift shop for un- usual souvenirs.
