Data collected from churches, wine presses, graves, tombs, skeletons, and ar- tifacts paint a positive picture of rural life that contrasts sharply with the picture of poverty developed by historians studying documents from the nearby large Roman/ Byzantine cities. Jerry Rose, an Emeritus U of A Professor in Anthroplogy, excavated early Christian villages in Jordan for 15 years and will use numerous illustrations of the excavations and materials stud- ied to paint a positive picture of country Christian life east of the Jordan River. This course will be taught on the nonspe- cialist level and be illustrated with exca- vation and analysis pictures throughout. Rose will utilize 15 years of experience directing excavations in the country of Jordan. View Spring fl ora and fauna during a voyage up the mountain along the Mount Magazine Scenic Byway. Once atop the mountain, a delectable Dutch-Treat lunch may be en- joyed while overlooking a breath-taking view of the Petit Jean River Valley and Blue Mountain Lake. If weather condi- tions permit, possibly hang-gliders may be viewed there, one of the state's most popular hang-gliding sites. The fi ne dining in the Skycrest Restaurant off ers a variety of delicious entries. Hicko- ry furniture completes the rustic warmth of this unique mountain dining experi- ence. After lunch, a visitor center with an inter-active exhibit gallery and gift shop, with high quality gifts and merchandise, may be explored. Paulo is no- torious for his exploitation and cutthroat mentality. This is until he meets a beauti- ful young woman who challenges him and his old ways. Join us in hearing Padma Viswanathan discuss the genesis and pro- cess behind her translation of Säo Ber- nardo, how she breathed new life into Ra- mos's enchanting and funny 1934 novel. Participants are highly encouraged to read the translation, published in May 2020 by New York Review Books, in advance of the session. Viswanathan's articles on the place of Graciliano Ramos in Brazilian and international letters are also available on- line or on request. In Hipbillies, Jared Phillips discusses his research into the subject, which combines oral histories and archival resources to weave the story of the Ozarks and its population of country beatniks into the national narrative, showing how the back to the landers engaged in "deep revolution" by sharing their ideas on rural development, small farm economy, and education with the locals, and how they became a fascinating part of a traditional region's coming to terms with the modern world in the process. Arkansas is home to hundreds of natural fl owing waterfalls that come to life during the wet seasons. Flowing over tall bluff s and grot- tos, they provide some of the most unique and beautiful sights in the state. On this outing, hikers will explore the Kings River Falls Natural Area. It includes 3 miles of the Kings River with the falls be- ing a focal point. The trail is a 2 mile round trip rated easy to moderate. It fi rst parallels Mitchell Cr. and then runs along the the Kings River and ending at the falls. Here one can enjoy cascading water, overhang- ing bluff s and the cool mist from the falls. Diana Michelle Hausam is sharing her photography expertise in this 6 session class for OLLI members. Partici- pants will enhance their skills using bet- ter techniques in composition, framing and lighting. She will also help the par- ticipants use the camera functions more comfortably and become more techni- cally knowledgeable. In 6 weeks, each participant will see their picture taking improve and will get im- mediate feedback from a pro. Hausam teaches photography and Photoshop at NTI and displays her fi ne art work in gal- leries and museums, both locally and re- gionally. Don't miss this opportunity to learn from one of the best.
