(1984) when he challenged an American patriotism that negelcted America's Vietnam veterans. Since then Springsteen, a self-proclaimed lapsed Catholic, has championed social justice while singing out on behalf of refugees, migrants, AIDS victims, day la- borers, the chronically poor, and other oppressed groups. This course off ers a close examination of Springsteen's lyrics and music (ca 1970 to 2020), explores his Catholic background, and discusses how these intersect with Christ's instruction to take care of "the least of these" (Matthew 25:40). Session 1: Making the Sacred Pro- fane and the Profane Sacred; Session 2: "And I believe in the Promised Land"; and Session 3: "There's a New World Coming, I can see the light." Join us, listen, and expe- rience for yourself "the power, the glory, (and) the ministry of rock 'n' roll" in Spring- steen's music. Both areas will be pre- sented along with common misconcep- tions that can cloud our interpretation of facts. Children learn things like to never give up, that there is always a way, to never underestimate them- selves, and many more lessons that help them grow into confi dent and successful adults. This is not a new concept; civiliza- tions have been doing this for centuries! In this course Joshua Bland, the Director of Missions and Outreach at First Church of Springdale, will explore a classic col- lection of Roman proverbs used to teach children. Together we will seek to under- stand what these sayings meant to their original audience and what we can learn from them today. We will virtually tour the Van Gogh Museum, explore Vincent's use of emotion and his fascination with Japa- nese art, examine his tumultuous rela- tionship with the artist Paul Gauguin, and discuss the famous "ear incident."
