Hackett made his way to Canada, but his owner, Alfred Wallace, pursued him and extradited him for theft. The extra- dition request set off an international dispute involving the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. In the end, Canada returned Hackett to slavery. But abolitionists in the U. S. and the UK convinced British officials that this had been a mistake and the officials announced that no more such fugitives would be returned. The class will use primary documents and discussion to delve into the Hackett case. Majestic buildings crumbled from neglect or were torn down to provide building ma- terial; the city languished in a backwa- ter, eclipsed by turmoil and neglect. Ba- roque architecture and art developed in Italy and were first linked to the Catholic Church's Counter-Reformation move- ment; the stupendous Baroque rebuild- ing of Rome was directed by a succes- sion of Popes, from Sixtus V to Innocent XI, with Urban VIII towering above them all. Power and art were bound together by Papal patronage and interpreted by a "dream team" of sculptors, painters, and artisans. Tom Paradise will lead this powerpoint discussion and address the beauty, history, art, architecture, and in- trigue of Rome's Baroque Period! INSTRUCTOR: Tom Paradise DAY/DATE: Friday, 2/26/21 (1) TIME: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM FORMAT: Virtual LOCATION: Via Zoom COST: $29 OLLI Member $44 Non-OLLI Member SWING MUSIC THROUGH THE GREAT DEPRESSION, WWII, AND BEYOND DESCRIPTION: As with all art, music is shaped by world events and in no other period of American history do world events have a greater impact than in the music called Swing. History records the stress created by economic crisis and war, a stress that was mainly addressed through dance, music, and the movies. Swing Music was an integral force in all three. Running from 1932 to 1942, the Swing Era took music that had roots in New Orleans with Louis Armstrong and developed it into a sophisticated art form that was, and continues to be, enjoyed by people of all cultures from around the world. In addition to delving into a bit of American history, sociology and expressive movement, Gary Bar- row, a retired ATU professor of music, will guide the classroom lectures and group discussions into glimpses inside the music and the fascinating lives of the Americans who created it. Some names in this group include Duke El- lington, Count Basie, Woody Hermann, The Andrews Sisters, Harry James, and Glenn Miller. Yesterday everything was normal - all your errands were done with little ef- fort, you planted pansies, picked up the grands for ice cream, cleaned out a clos- et, and helped your mate organize one section of the garage. But this morning you're sore all over. It's not an injury. Your muscle strength is gone. You can't bend or twist without being very careful. You move more slowly because you are afraid of falling. Standing up and sitting down resemble comedy routines. Your mind is still sharp - if you get a couple of naps in during the day! There is a so- lution for improving the body changes that come with aging. Healthy aging re- quires one to systematically stretch and condition muscles that will protect the aging joints. The slow, exact movements practiced in Yoga will enhance strength, eliminate joint stiffness, restore flexibil- ity and range of motion, improve agility, and improve balance. These key areas - strength, flexibility, agility and balance - are the foundations of healthy living and living without the morning shuffle of pain and stiffness.
