DESCRIPTION: From ancient times, acts of courage and people of cour- age have been praised. At the same time, when we observe our own envi- ronments, courage sometimes seems to be in short supply. Probably every- one agrees that a society is benefited by courage. Certainly children benefit from lessons about courageous people. But what is courage? How is it differ- ent from, say, plucky rashness? In this course, we'll look at brief excerpts from classic sources--Gilgamesh, Aristotle, Sophocles, the books of Esther and Dan- iel, Shakespeare--with the goal of bring- ing the topic home to our own world--to thinking about the little acts of courage a society needs it if it's going to flourish.
