During the second session, participants will learn about the ecosystem first hand during a native plant walk at Lake Fayetteville. If the hike is not possible he will present a virtual hike to all of the participants. The U of A Razorback Campus and the Northwest Arkansas Community work to create a welcoming atmosphere, and to provide a variety of resources to aid in the transitions from these varied cul- tures. Do you have a passion for all things or- ganic? Join us on Larry Galligan's tour of his Riverside Specialty Farm in West Fork, AR. He will guide us through his diversified three-season organic vege- table farm while he explains the ins and outs of owning and operating this land. Larry will discuss scale appropriate tools and season extension structures and how those can help build better farms to localize our food system, to feed our own communities with small scale farmers, and create a more sustainable future. Larry covers much more such as pest, weed and disease management; soil fertility and reduced-till agriculture; and sales and marketing. Come learn with us on this fun tour! What are the expectations, the charac- teristics, components, and understand- ings that bring birders back to the same places often with the same people, year after year? Rick Jones, an avid birder for decades, will share his take on what makes a bird walk exceptionally pleas- ant, even when something unexpected happens. The first hour/session will be via Zoom, then participants will meet the next week at 7:30 am for a two-hour bird walk at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks and the Mulhollan Wildlife Blind. Celebrating its 100th year in 2019 and originally known as the Main Agri- cultural Experiment Station until 1996, the 725-acre Arkansas Agricultural Re- search and Extension Center (AAREC) is the main research station for the Uni- versity of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture and involves all Division re- search disciplines in the areas of animal science; poultry science; food science; horticulture; insect pests and plant dis- eases; crops, soil and water resources; biological and agricultural engineering; and agri-science and technology. More than 250 faculty/extension personnel, research specialists, technicians, and graduate students work at the center. Come and tour the facility and get in- sights into some of the novel research being conducted here. * Participants should expect some light walking and should wear appropriate attire for both outside and inside pre- sentations/activities. This course will teach you the basics you need to be able to identify wildflow- ers. Key to this will be learning about plant families and how to identify the common plant families you will encoun- ter while out and about in nature. Ad- ditional topics will include selecting a field guide that best meets your needs and learning the terminology you will need to use them successfully. INSTRUCTOR: Sue Hubbard DAY/DATE: Friday, 4/16/21 (1) TIME: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM FORMAT: Virtual LOCATION: Via Zoom COST: $29 OLLI Member $44 Non-OLLI Member MAKING RIPPLES: SHARING OUR JOURNEY TO PRESERVE HISTORY AND ECOLOGY DESCRIPTION: This course introduces the concept of the Ripples project and explores how the instructor and her husband apply it to their life at the His- toric Johnson Farm, where they live off- grid utilizing solar electricity, rainwater, and a composting toilet. Topics to be covered will be guided by student inter- est and may include the history archives (digitized papers and photos), sustain- able living practices, conservation proj- ects, native plants and wildlife. Partici- pants can enjoy a walking tour of the farm, cemetery and off-grid cabin sites. Each student will be encouraged to cre- ate a personal goal to make ripples to help people and/or our planet, and pro- vided one-on-one support as needed.
