28 SEPTEMBER 20 - 26, 2017 Best of Fayetteville Best Breakfast MaryBills Cafe 801 Elm St. (910) 221-1170 No doubt breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so do it right at this cozy cafe nestled in the Eutaw North shopping center. The cafe is family-owned and operated by Mary Rogers and her son Robbie. One first-time guest raved on the MaryBills Facebook page: "I wish I would have heard of this place three years ago! … Immediate seating. Friendly service. … Atmosphere is quirky and eclectic. Probably won't eat breakfast anywhere else the rest of the time we are stationed here!" Another Facebook reviewer put it simply, stating with a five-star rating, "If you are in Fayetteville, this is the place for breakfast." Choose from dozens of breakfast options like Mary's Signature Omelet (a three-egg omelet stuffed with roasted turkey, pepper jack cheese and spinach) or Ms. Gail's Crabcake Benedict (two grilled crab cakes topped with sliced tomatoes, two eggs and creamy hollandaise sauce over an English muffin). Buttered grits, hash browns and biscuits are MaryBills' southern specialties. But this joint is not just for breakfast. MaryBills is open for lunch until 2:30 p.m. on weekdays and until 2 p.m. on weekends. Homemade burgers like Mushroom and Swiss and specialty sandwiches like Triple Grilled Cheese, along with sides like fried okra, potato salad and coleslaw, are followed by homemade desserts — "slice of cake" or "slice of pie." Always delicious, always friendly and the perfect example of Fayetteville's homespun hospitality. Enjoy! Best Sunday Brunch Hilltop House Restaurant and Catering 1240 Fort Bragg Rd. (910) 484-6699 or www.hilltophousenc.com Located in historic Haymount, the Hilltop House was originally built in 1910 by Scottish brothers Augustus Hiram Kelly and Duncan Ray Kelly. The home has since been renovated while retaining all of its original character, beauty and charm. It served as an antique shop in the '80s before arriving at its final incarnation as the beloved, award-winning restaurant it is today. Hilltop House serves cuisine that's like the building itself: an enchanting fusion of classic, traditional sensibilities with modern twists. Beth Shearin-Smith has been the restaurant's executive chef and owner since 2006. For years, the Hilltop House's weekly Sunday Brunch has been the Fayetteville community's favorite and most popular breakfast destination. The award-winning breakfast buffet is practically legendary — especially if you enjoy mid-morning mimosas. Recently, the future of the Hilltop House has come into question. The property is for sale and on the market for $699,000. Attempts to reach Smith by phone for details have been unsuccessful. However, we do know that Beth Smith is a great chef, an awesome caterer and extremely involved in and dedicated to the Fayetteville and Cumberland County community. At the end of September, Smith is working with the local Second Harvest Food Bank to help produce its major Food Fight fundraising event. Talented, funny and always generous, Smith and her Hilltop House have been wonderful additions to the Historic Haymount community. Hopefully, both will be around for a very long time.
