SEPTEMBER 20 - 26, 2017 UCW 7 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Best Thing to Hide From Out-of-Town Visitors Bragg Boulevard Bragg Boulevard wins this category year after year. Once the gateway to Fort Bragg, seeing tens of thousands of cars each day, the bou- levard is no longer an entrance to the post. There's still plenty going on, though. This perennial win- ner is a head-scratcher. Considering its reputa- tion as a place of mis- chief and testosterone- filled hijinks — and there are plenty of bars and strip clubs to be found here — Bragg Boulevard is also home to many of Fayetteville's favorite restaurants, museums, bars and high-end spas. MaryBills in Eutaw Village Shopping center, ASOM, Saigon Bistro and Renaissance European Day Spa are all on Bragg Boulevard and were all voted Best of Fayetteville winners this year. Take into consideration the Villagio apart- ment complex, the 2.5 miles of newly paved road and the many respectable family-run businesses, and one could argue that change is afoot. Yet somehow, this six-ish mile stretch of road that draws partiers looking for a good time and Fayetteville's elite in search of pampering can't seem to outrun its reputation as a rough and tumble blight on the community. Maybe next year will be the year it escapes this title. Hopefully Bragg Boulevard will receive high priority attention from the Fayetteville Gateway Committee. What Downtown Needs Most Parking Perception is reality. Did you know Fayetteville has a 300-space parking deck right in the heart of downtown? It's on Franklin Street, and in 2013 it won the International Parking Institute Award of Excellence and the Carolina's Parking Association Award of Excellence for New Facility design. But, in actuality, how would you know? Downtown Fayetteville does a poor job marketing and promot- ing itself to the outside world. The parking deck is a major asset to the downtown community — but unfortunately, it is one of its best- kept secrets. The parking deck is safe, clean, well lit, eco-friendly and it even has its own electric vehicle charging station. Parking is free in the evenings and on weekends. What's not to like? Those who venture downtown, though, continue to circle the block in search of free storefront parking or even paid parking that is just a few steps closer to Hay Street. Unfortunately, way too many fall victim to the lurking "parking gestapo" who prey on tardy parking violators by issuing citations by the dozen. This assures future nonparticipation in the Historic Downtown Fayetteville experience. Many feel the parking situation downtown needs to be addressed imme- diately — definitely before 2019, when the new baseball stadium will be completed. Otherwise, the local tow truck industry will experience a profit- able uptick in their business. Fresh Seafood Arriving Daily!
