SEPTEMBER 20 - 26, 2017 UCW 15 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM POLITICS POLITICS Most Responsive City Politician/ Most Respected Civic Leader Kirk deViere, Fayetteville City Council member (District 2) 513 Oakridge Ave. (910) 920-0525 or www.fayettevillenc.gov Kirk deViere may not have been born and raised in Fayetteville, but he has called our city home for the last 17 years. From the moment he moved to Fayetteville, deViere started investing in the community. He's worked with downtown revitalization, eco- nomic development, arts and entertainment, military support and the Greater Fayetteville Chamber. He served as the youngest chairman of the Chamber in 2006 and was the founding chair for the Fayetteville Young Professionals in 2009. He spearheaded the development of the Defense, Security and Technology Accelerator and Partnership for Defense in 2005. He also co-founded Fayetteville Cares, a military support organization. deViere was selected as one of the "Top 20 People under 40" by The Fayetteville Observer in 2006. The Greater Fayetteville Chamber selected him as the Young Professional of the Year in 2011. He currently serves as a trustee at Fayetteville State University. While he's worked hard to make a difference when and where he is able, deViere discovered that while Fayetteville is a wonderful city, it's not a perfect city. So he ran for office, and he's served on Fayetteville City Council representing District 2 since 2015. deViere is the owner and president of 219 Group, a marketing, advertising and PR agency, and he is currently running to be Fayetteville's next mayor. He believes that "to move forward and for all our citizens to prosper, we must have an action plan to help our neighbors get out of this cycle of generational pov- erty." He has created and is leading an initiative called Pathway for Prosperity to change this cycle. For these efforts, deViere has been named both the Most Responsive City Politician and the Most Respected Civic Leader for 2017. Most Responsive County Politician Cumberland County Commissioner Michael Boose P.O. Box 1829, Fayetteville (910) 678-7771 or www.co.cumberland.nc.us Actions speak louder than words, and action is what you get when interacting with Cumberland County Commissioner Michael Boose. He has practiced law in Fayetteville for more than 35 years. He's served as an assistant district attorney, prosecuting misde- meanors and felonies in District 2 and Superior Court. He also served as the former town attorney for both Hope Mills and Spring Lake, and he currently prac- tices law in historic downtown Fayetteville as a senior partner at the Boose Law Office on Dick Street. Boose is much more than a good lawyer. He has a heart for the local community. He was elected to a four-year term as a Cumberland County commissioner at-large and served 18 years on the Cumberland County Board of Education. While there, he was elected to serve four terms as the board's chairman. Governor Pat McCrory appointed him the North Carolina chairman of the board of the Federal Military Interstate Compact Commission for Children. Boose also served as a member of the board of trustees for Fayetteville Technical Community College for 12 years, and he is a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine — North Carolina's highest civilian honor. We could go on and on about his service on the board of directors for the Boys and Girls Club and his memberships in Rotary, Kiwanis and the Greater Fayetteville Chamber, as well as his support of the Arts Council, Cape Fear Bo- tanical Garden and Teen Court. All of these activities only confirm his passion for his community and the fact that he responds to the needs of the people in Cumberland County.
