SEPTEMBER 20 - 26, 2017 UCW 19 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Best Place for a Hike/Best Place for a Doggie Walk Cape Fear River Trail 631 Sherman Dr. (910) 433-1547 Winning both titles again and again, Cape Fear River Trail remains a natural gem for community members both human and canine. Whatever your motiva- tion — fun outing, high-intensity workout, commune with nature and your best tail-wagging friend — the Trail's the place to go. Stretching about 5 miles long one way and 10 feet wide, the asphalt-paved trail accommodates walkers, runners, bikers, inline skaters and those who want to veer off the literal and metaphorical beaten path to do a bit of fishing. The trail is primarily flat but includes a few steep, challenging hills. More than 700 species of plant and tree life and 150 species of birds — along with frogs, lizards and deer — live along the trail. A 1,000-foot boardwalk guides visitors through marsh and wetlands, and one of the trail's many bridges spans a deep ravine with a waterfall view. Parking is available at the southern terminus (Clark Park Nature Center, 631 Sherman Dr.) or at the northern terminus (Jordan Soccer Complex, 445 Treetop Dr.). The trail is open every day of the year from 8 a.m. until dusk. Next time your dog starts pawing at the door, consider making the short drive to Cape Fear River Trail for a refreshing experience.
