8 SEPTEMBER 20 - 26, 2017 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Best Local Community Project Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity 310 Green St. (910) 483-0952 or www.fayettevillenchabitat.org "To ease another's heartache is to forget one's own." — Abraham Lincoln Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity's mission is to bring peo- ple together to build homes, communities, and hope. Community engage- ment is the spirit of Habitat for Humanity, which started as a grass-roots effort and became an organized movement dedicated to providing simple, decent, energy efficient and affordable homes for families who lack adequate shelter. With engaged volunteers and a dedi- cated staff, FAHFH is creating affordable housing, which improves the com- munity by increasing the tax base. Tammy Laurence is the CEO of FAHFH. Hard-working and dedicated, Laurence has recently been chosen by N.C. State University's Institute for Nonprofits to teach Community Capacity Building this fall in its executive leadership program. "Community development is my passion," said Laurence, who has been with FAHFH for four years. "I am fortunate to have the opportunity to com- bine academics and real life experience in community development, building collaborative networks, and neighborhood revitalization. FAHFH is also doing its part to keep Fayetteville and the surrounding areas "green" and beautiful by accepting donations of furniture, housewares and appliances at the Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore located at 3833 Bragg Blvd. Items that would otherwise take up space in landfills are sold to the public and potentially "upcycled" for better use. Best Local Non-Profit KidsPeace 2944 Breezewood Ave., Suite 203 (910) 223-0949 or fostercare.com/fayetteville A family should be a safe place, a place where children prosper and grown-ups provide stable, loving homes. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. When that happens, children need adults who will take their circumstances into account and advocate for their best interests. They need adults who lis- ten to them, give them proper care and let them know they are loved — even when their little hearts are so broken and they are so out of sorts that they don't feel lovable. That means taking in the most troubled and difficult-to-place children and finding just the right family to foster them. Kidspeace educates potential foster families about the traumas these children sometimes face and teaches them how to best care for the children. It includes hosting and conducting work- shops about relevant but sometimes uncomfortable topics like human traf- ficking, bullying and abuse. It involves fun things, too, like hosting the annual KidsPeace Chair-ity Auction, which helps fund its work: helping families heal and watching children flourish in the right loving environment. And perhaps most importantly, giving children the stability and love every kid should have often means finding creative and effective ways to make a dif- ference in the lives of children, their families and the community. KidsPeace has been doing these good works since 1882; it's no wonder they have been chosen one of the best organizations in Fayetteville.
