SEPTEMBER 20 - 26, 2017 UCW 5 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Best Local Landmark Market House The Market House sits in the center of the downtown round- about at Person, Hay, Green and Gillespie Streets. For many, it's synonymous with the word Fayetteville. It's on the city seal, it's the subject of local pho- tography contests, and twice a year, the sun shines just right through the archways creating a spectacular view of Hay Street and downtown at sunrise. This site has a rich history as well. Though sometimes contro- versial, this post-Revolutionary War structure was a political and economic powerhouse. In fact, Fayetteville hosted the North Carolina Constitutional Convention here. And at this site (then a statehouse), Nov. 21, 1789, delegates ratified the U.S. Constitution. The statehouse burned in a fire in 1831, and the present Market House was built in its place in 1832. The ground level of the building was used as a marketplace until 1907, and up until 1906, the upper level served as the town hall. Today, the iconic building hosts local history exhibits and is open the second and fourth Fridays of the month. The view from the upper level offers a fresh perspective of downtown. Best Little-Known Attraction/Best Extreme Activity/ Adventure ZipQuest 533 Carvers Falls Rd. (910) 488-8787 or www.zipquest.com ZipQuest was built on land granted to Samuel Carver by King George II of England in 1735. The forested 55-acre plot is home to the scenic Carver Falls, which once powered a millhouse (visible from several ziplines) on the property. The Bryan family has owned the property for several years. In 2009, they decided to share this beauti- ful space in with the public — and in the most exciting way they could imagine. They built a multi-zipline course. If variety is the spice of life, ZipQuest has you covered. Cruise the treetop can- opy and take in the natural beauty of the Sandhills in all its glory. Or fly through the trees for a short but heart-thumping ride. Climb floating staircases, cross suspension bridges, take in the views from platforms on trees that are hundreds of years old. Ziplining under the stars? They offer that, too. Or take a ride on the swing shot and catch a bird's eye view of Carver's Falls. Go on a FalconQuest and experience birds of prey up close and personal. Hawks, owls, falcons and even a vulture make an appearance in the show. Though it's tucked away off the beaten path, both ZipQuest and Carver Falls State Park are quickly becoming must-see attractions and destination points here in Cumberland County. No doubt ZipQuest is Fayetteville's best extreme activity/adventure. Thank You Fayetteville!
