Some communities have live nativities, some communities having singing Christmas trees or annual tree lightings. While Fayetteville is blessed to have all of those, one of the most treasured traditions is the annual staging of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by the Cape Fear Regional Theatre. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever tells the story of the Herdmans — the meanest kids in town. The Herdmans cuss, they steal, they fight, they do everything bad, and when they decide to take over the church's annual Christmas play, well, mayhem ensues. It is that mayhem that has drawn the excitement and particpation of hun- dreds of the community's children over the past several decades. Kids line up in droves for a shot at being an angel, a shepherd or (with great luck) a Herdman. So many kids line up that the theatre cast not one, not two, but three casts to act during the run of the show. School children come to the show and leave laughing, but with the spirit of Christmas alive. It's a show that draws parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. It's a show about us and how sometimes, we get so caught up in tra- dition, that we forget the reason for the season.
