In this instance, the true heart of our community can be seen in the way we treat children who have been abused. The heartbeat that drives that effort is the Child Advocacy Center, whose purpose is to alleviate the trauma children experience once a disclosure of sexual abuse or serious physical abuse occurs, by creating a community of collaborat- ing advocates. The organization's vision is to help build a community where children live in a safe and nurturing environment free from sexual and physical abuse, and its mission is to join hands with com- munity partners, providing a safe and child-friendly center that sup- ports the prevention, investigation and prosecution of child abuse. During FY 2015, the Child Advocacy Center served 661 children and their families and, by its coordinating efforts, saved the commu- nity an estimated $600,000. Best Local Fundraiser The Duck Derby Fayetteveille Urban Ministry 701 Whitfield St. 910.483. 5944 or www.fayurbmin.org Each year, countless organizations within Cumberland County hosts fundraisers. Each is seeking to find the right mixture of fun that will draw the community together to support their organization. Five years ago, Fayetteville Urban Ministry put together a fundraiser that has not only impacted the organization, but has gained a following within the community: The Duck Derby. For the first time, last year's Duck Derby was held in conjunction with the Dogwood Festival. Chaired by Heather Craig, the derby was again a huge success. The key to its success is that the fundraiser doesn't just target one agency, instead, it gives a myriad of agencies within the community the opportunity to raise funds all at once. More than 10,000 ducks raced through creek at Festival Park, the derby's new venue, where even the last duck won a prize. Throughout the event a number of prizes were given away, with Patrick Lewis winning a camper from Camping World of Fayetteville, one of the Urban Ministry's partners in the event. Of course, the biggest winner was the community, with more than $52,000 raised for Fayetteville Urban Ministry and 30 other nonprofits, all of which serve the local community.
