CUMBERLAND Apply Now For Master Gardener Class Don Soucy receives the Cumberland Cares Recognition Award from Cumberland County Commissioner Kenneth Edge Aug. 19. Volunteer Receives Cares Award Cumberland County Commissioners presented Don Soucy, a volunteer with the North Carolina Missions of Mercy Free Adult Dental Clinic, with the Cumberland Cares Recognition Award at their Aug. 19 meeting. The two-day clinic was held at the Charlie Rose Agri-Expo Center in July. Soucy organized and trained more than 400 community volunteers for the event. Their duties included helping with patient registration, medical and dental triage; and serving as scribes, translators, runners and data entry clerks. Cumberland Cares recognizes a Cumberland County individual, group or agency which has made an outstanding contribution toward a better quality of life for the county's citizens. Cumberland County Cooperative Extension's Master Gardener Volunteer program is accepting applications for its threemonth volunteer training course that begins in January. Individuals The Demonstration Garden located beside the Cumberland County Expo Center at 301 interested in E. Mountain Drive is a project of the Master becoming Extension Gardener Volunteer Program. Master Gardener Volunteers are encouraged to apply before the Nov. 15 deadline. The class runs Jan. 16 - April 17 and will meet every Thursday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Cumberland County Cooperative Extension Auditorium, located at 301 East Mountain Drive. There is a cost for the training, which covers supplies and the Extension Master Gardener training manual. Applications are available on the Cooperative Extension website at http://cumberland.ces.ncsu.edu or by contacting Kenny Bailey at 910321-6871 or kenneth_bailey@ncsu.edu. Beginning Beekeeping Course Cooperative Extension is also offering a beginning beekeeping course starting Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. The course will be held every Monday evening for six weeks in the Cooperative Extension Office. The course is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is requested by noon on Sept. 30, but not required.
