CITY LIFE Best Local Landmark Coolest Place In Downtown Fayetteville The Market House Hay St. 910.323.1934 Cameo Art House Theatre Like it or not, Fayetteville's Market House remains the focal point of our historic downtown. It is the centerpiece of our community; reminding us every day of our rich heritage. Completed in 1832, it was built on the ruins of Fayetteville's old State House and served as a town market until 1906. At the turn of the century, it was the social center of Fayetteville where meat, produce, and yes, occasionally slaves were sold before abolition. The second floor served as the town hall and general meeting place. The cupola bell, now a clock, rang out daily signifying breakfast, dinner, sundown and curfew. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973, it is one of the few structures in America employed the town hall-market scheme found in 19th century England. The Market House served as Fayetteville's Town Hall until 1907 and has had many uses since. Today, the Market House serves as a museum under the direction of Bruce Daws, Fayetteville's historian. Daws coordinates Market House exhibits year round. 225 Hay St. 910.486.6636 www.cameoarthouse. com The 124-seat Cameo Art House Theatre and its iconic marquee speaks volumes of the potential Downtown Fayetteville has to attract those who want to experience real southern charm with a touch of nostalgia. Owners Chris and Nasim Kuenzel and fellow archeitect and friend, Eric Lindstrom, purchased the 1920s building in 1997 and spent the next three years and an estimated $500,000 plus creating a downtown entertainment venue out of what was a pool hall. The Cameo has won several preservation and adaptive architectural awards. It expanded in 2002 and added a second screen (the Loge) on the second floor. Movie-goers love the small theatre's unique atmosphere, gourmet treats and exquisite selection of beer and wine. This year Cameo fans rallied their support and money to save the Cameo Art House Theatre from going dark when the owners found themselves in a head-on collision with technology.
