Frank then saw that Charles’ hole had caved in and ran to get his shovel. He raced back and began digging where he thought Charles might be. As he dug, Frank fran- tically yelled out for help to the other miners while he hollered towards the col- lapsed hole, “Charles, please stay alive.” The German miner heard Frank and his head. Pulling him out, they brushed the sand from his face. He was barely conscious, but alive. Shortly Charles opened his eyes as they continued to vig- orously massage his arms and legs that were blue from the lack of oxygen. They fashioned a makeshift litter from a tarp and carried him back to camp. By then he was fully conscious and said he wasn’t hurt anywhere; all he wanted was to rest. He told us that he had been gophering a tunnel from the main hole with his arms up in the tunnel. Then heard a loud swoosh and his hat and light were gone. Realizing that he had only a few minutes of air he cried out, “Please, someone help me!” Remembering that at that depth no one would hear, in desperation, he cried, “Please God, help me!” Throughout the ordeal he had kept his presence of mind to hold on to something that he had found right before the cave-in. From behind his lower lip he drew out a large gold nug- get and handed it to me. I pulled off a sock from our son’s foot, slipped in the nugget, and tied a knot. If Frank Martinez had known there hurried to help. Then Pete Gonzales came running over the hill, shovel in hand, to help in the life-saving effort. Frank pulled the sand back while the other two frantically shoveled the loose gravel. As Mr. Oldham came up the wash they hollered, “Your son is buried.” He rushed to join in the frantic effort to find Charles. Soon they found his hat and then saw ���.D�����M��������.��� Rotary’s Annual Christmas Trees raffle underway Quartzsite Rotary’s 5th Annual Christ- mas Tree and Wreath raffle will be here soon. They’re asking for donations of a Christmas tree 18 to 48 inches tall, or a wreath 9 to 18 inches across, completely decorated in a theme of your choice de- picting the Holiday season, your business or hobby interests. Please tightly secure all decorations and deliver to Town Hall now through December 11th. Please be sure to fill in a Donation card. Rotary members will be selling tickets at $5 each or 6 for $20. The winning tickets will be drawn the week of December 12th, 2010. ALL proceeds from this event are distributed in the community to help bring happiness to those less fortunate than we are. Rotary’s TV raffle tickets are $5 each or 6 for $20 and proceeds will support our Annual Scholarship Fund. These funds are awarded to a student was a baby in camp, he probably would not have climbed out of his hole, and the story of what happened that day in the La Paz Placers could have ended entirely different. All students are en- couraged to submit an application. These funds are not limited to those who have been accepted at a college or university. Students attending a “trade school” may also apply for our scholarship. Previous recipients have been our fire department trainees, students interested in becom- ing beauticians, attendees to our local Western Arizona College and of course students attending a University.
