Early credit union leaders found it disheartening when a member took out a loan and then died or became disabled, and a family member or cosigner would be responsible for the balance of the loan. Leaders of the credit union movement felt that insurance was as fundamental as savings and credit, and they believed the movement should supply its own insurance. So, in 1935, CUNA Mutual Insurance Society was formed and began off ering credit insurance.
