November 16, 2011 Submitted by Dottie Palmer STEP ONE: in recycling, it's just like separating the words in the string of letters above. We can recycle if we are three years old or ninety-three years old. It is good for us, our home, our community, our country and our planet. We can reduce resource deple- tion as our planet's population soars. We just reached 7,000,000,000 souls on this spaceship. Our spaceship, Earth, has no passengers. We are all on the crew. Recycling is one of the responsibili- ties of the crew. LOCALLY: Allied Waste Services accepts mixed paper, mixed plastics and mixed cans in three large dark green bins just West of Bashas' in Parker. Palo Verde Valley Disposal Services accepts cardboard only, newspaper only, plastic milk, soda and water bottles and aluminum cans in one mustard colored bin east of the Quartzsite Library on E. Quail Trail. HEROINE: Melissa Schweisguth was featured in Time magazine as a com- munity service pioneer because she hasn't thrown anything away since 2006. She is a sustainability expert who worked for Hershey and advises organic food companies. She can fit a www.DesertMessenger.com Paperglassaluminumtinplastic year's garbage in one coffee can. She composts, recycles and reuses. Her life is aligned with her values. And she gets paid for her advice. WEBSITE: www.recyclemania.org is an annual recycling competition between colleges and universities which aims to reduce waste and raise awareness. YOU: are invited to submit your creative recycling story to me with permission to print your name. Each edition I'll select the most unique recycle story to inspire the rest of us. I can't wait to hear your great ideas! Thank You. EXAMPLE: I re-roofed a small outbuilding with a leaky plywood roof. Using a tin snips I cut from the inside circumference to the outside circumference of ten old inner tubes, snipping each bell shaped section in two. I stapled them in place from the bottom to the top of the roof with my staple gun. No more leaks. (50-60 words please). If we don't recycle we are throwing it all away.
