You know, "They did that", "They need to do something about that", "They aren't doing it right", etc. I heard just the other day, "They should clean up around town." When I suggested "You" could help, I was met with resistance. DEADLINE is WED. Open Mon-Fri. 10-5 928-927-5958 by Shanana "Rain" Golden-Bear Why is it that we humans tend to talk about "them" as if we are sepa- rate from each other? So I went to my friend, "Google" and asked, "who is 'they?'" I found some rather funny an- swers to my inquiry. I learned that a man le- gally changed his name to "They" for humor to address the common reference to "they". It's so easy to place blame on "them" for something not right in our own lives. Otherwise we might have to do some soul searching ourselves. How many times have we heard "they" don't know what "they" are doing? Do you even know "their" names? Usually not, as "they" is often used to talk about someone we don't know. This type of talk shuts off our hearts from another. It's just easier to complain about someone we don't know, continuing the "they" are out to get me syndrome. When we distance ourselves from "them" or another, we are creating conflict inside ourselves. Every re- ligion speaks of treating each other with kindness; not creating con- flict in the world. But we find our world full of conflict, even in our little town, swelling each day with visitors. Talk is cheap! It's easy to blame "them" for all the woes in Quartzsite. What if we changed our self talk about what "they" are doing or not doing? Imagine "we" might actu- ally get involved. Maybe there's something to the Lakota phrase of "Mitakuye Oya- DESERT November 16, 2011 sin" meaning we are all related. There are many ancient teachings suggesting we can learn from each other when our hearts become open and recognize we are all hu- man beings living on this planet. "They" is often used when we don't who "they" are. Maybe we don't know the name of someone, or it's just a generality of those in perceived authority. There are many opportunities in Quartzsite to become involved. Town volun- teer boards, local charitable orga- nizations, churches, the food bank, Senior Center, and countless other activities held by volunteers. As the day of Thanksgiving ap- proaches, we can express our con- nectedness to each other through our actions. It can be as simple as smiling to the person on your path, waving to others as you drive by, visiting your shut-in neighbor for a moment to see if they have their needs met, donate items for 4-H Club raffles, pick up trash along the washes, and of course, pick up after your four-legged friend. Every action taken with inten- tion creates a ripple affect. Imag- ine when we all pitch in a little; the wave would be huge! You have just as much right to be one of "them" as "they" do. So the next time you are tempted to talk about "them", ask yourself, "how can I be part of the solution?" Pretty soon, you might find your- self becoming really active in your community and being called one of "them"!
