November 16, 2011 Escaping winter cold by lawn mower! by Joanne Winer Many people come to the desert southwest to escape the winter cold in the northern states-some by RV, car, truck, plane etc. But this is the first time we have ever heard of anyone ar- riving in the town by MOWER! Stephen Hulsey, from Grants Pass, Oregon, had been laid off work as a flagger on the highway. His unem- ployment ran out, and his trailer was gone, and he wanted to get away from the subzero temperatures in Oregon. He heard about Quartzsite, and de- cided to spend the winter here. Now, his problem was, without a vehicle to drive here, the only thing he had left was his Craftsman Lawn Tractor! And so, he built himself a little trailer to haul behind it, grabbed his faithful friend and travelling companion L.T., and headed out on October 13 on his 21HP 42" cut Craftsman lawnmower. He averaged 35 miles a day, and stayed on roadsides in his sleeping bag and tent. One of the reporters he talked to was Laura Cava- naugh from Channel 2/5 in Klamath Falls, near Medford Oregon. She got hold of him when he was in Carson City, and asked if he would go to Reno. He was met in Reno by a representa- tive from Craftsman Co., who offered to fly him and the dog to Phoenix, and truck down his lawn mower and trailer in a Sears truck.
