With grate- ful hearts, many local residents wel- come our friends and extended family to their winter homes! Sure, it might be a challenge for folks used to the qui- et pace of a small town to welcome the throngs of visitors...however...that's what makes Quartzsite so unique! Without our winter visitors, we would Register now! Zumba Gold Fitness for Seniors! DITCH THE WORKOUT JOIN THE PARTY! by Shanana "Rain" Golden-Bear just be a sleepy little rural town. Quartzsite really is a quiet usually uneventful, town during the summer, where everyone knows their neighbors. Most people love the quiet that a small rural community brings. Our quiet was shattered this summer as a video went "viral". Ru- mors still abound about what really took place. At a recent Town Hall meeting, Town Manager Alex Taft and offi- cials explained their position. A video showing the discussion is on www. youtube.com/user/qwatchingeyes. If you missed the meeting, now you can watch it online. Since so much publicity was being spread about perceived negativity of our town, I decided to celebrate what we do well in Quartzsite by launching "The Best of Quartzsite!" Here is your chance to tell the whole world why you love Quartzsite! The ballot is on Page 27 of this issue and will be published again in the Nov. 16th issue. The categories were narrowed down to those that are unique-to-Quartzsite. Business owners, have fun and suggest to your customers, "vote for us" by showing off your talents and services! It's a "friendly" competition, folks. No trashing others allowed! To vote online, check www.DesertMessenger. com for the link. Remember, you can't love and hate at the same time, so why not celebrate what you love about what makes Quartzsite unique? Events of the season are filling up the calendar, now that the QIA is open, and Arizona Centennial of Quartz- site board has been working over a year on new events. Speaking of new events, this past weekend, the Hi Jolly Cemetery Board hosted a phenominal "Spirit Walk", a live walking tour of DESERT November 2, 2011 our historic Pioneer Cemetery. Dinice Ross, and the Cemetery Board mem- bers really showed the heritage of our town through their volunteer "spirits", telling stories of their past escapades in Quartzsite. Congratulations to ev- eryone who took on the challenge of this spectacular event! Truly amazing! Starr BearCat recorded the whole tour and it is now online at www.you- tube.com/user/qwatchingeyes. It will be there for generations to come! Face- book it and Tweet it to your friends to showcase our famous cemetery! Our Halloween festivities were again extremely special for our communi- ty. Great job, Anita Carlson and QES PTA! Quartzsite is comprised of many year-round volunteers who make this community special. When snowbirds arrive, the activity increases as do the volunteering opportunities. Also, just a reminder for folks camping in BLM lands: even though the washes are dry at the moment, water does flow in them. Please respect them as water- ways; don't place tree trimmings, dog waste, or trash in the washes. just heard the sad news of the Town's Code Enforcement officer passing this morning. Gary Howell, only 54 years young, leaves behind many family members, friends and coworkers who will dearly miss his smiling face. Ven- dors will remember him as the one who asked, "do you have a vendor's permit?" as he made his way around town. He loved to talk with visitors and enjoyed working for the town. He leaves behind his wife, Tona, and a teenage daughter, Angie who attends Scholars' Academy. As the news is so raw and I go to print shortly, I will post on Facebook/Desert Messenger and www.QuartzsiteBlog. com further information regarding ar- rangements. Council Member Patricia Anderson said, "he will be sorely missed."
