Page 22 PERSPECTIVES FROM PAGE 15 It brings to mind how communities get involved with each other and the young, middle-aged and elderly all come together for the same goal…a spirit of togetherness uniting to protect their own and one another. So, who's watching the children? We should be able to say, "We are"! Our family is newer here, I admit. My husband and I have come here in the winters off and on for over 12 years now. We moved in year-round 3 years ago. What I have seen lacking is the community spirit of families with the rest of the town. We have many fam- ily-oriented activities yet see very few who participate. We have many orga- nizations to help those less fortunate and to support town business-owners, etc. What I do not see is participation, volunteering or joining community or- ganizations. Those people that com- plain the most are not seen participat- ing, not even for their children. Some may participate at school yet are never seen at other times. These very people www.DesertMessenger.com like the complainer I wrote about at the beginning of this piece, keep say- ing they are going to 'monitor' the Po- lice and see if they will be at the school each and every day, and believe you me, they will go on complaining each and every day if they are not present at that exact moment. This same person said he dropped off his child and saw no one was there. Amazingly, I will as- sume he left right away instead of stay- ing there to see his child walk into that very school. Let's really think about who should be watching the children. There is no better way for a town to heal, to support its townspeople (all of them), to thrive, than to be part of the cure, part of the answer, part of the solution. Who watches over the chil- dren? We all do. If you want a better place for your children to be safe and happy, don't complain, participate! At any time, if you have questions or ideas you wish a "Perspective" to dis- cuss, please write, call or email: Per- spectives, c/o The Desert Messenger at desertmessenger7@yahoo.com. Food Bank help for Thanksgiving! Submitted by Carol Kelley We have over 200 clients at the Food Bank and are growing each week. They have cut us down to 1 box per month. with the addition to one emergency bag per month. In this economy that's not much, but every little bit helps. Thanksgiving is coming and I have a goal in mind and need your help. I have put together a menu, not fancy, but doable. Here is our wish-list: A Cornish hen or a small Danish Canned Ham 1 pouch of mashed potatoes 1 pouch of gravy mix 1 can sweet potatoes 1 can of cranberry sauce 1 can vegetables 1 can fruit 1 loaf bread or rolls The items that we are in need of: Sweet potatoes -mashed, Cranberry Sauce, gravy, Hams or Cornish Game Hens And if anyone has a real frozen turkey that would be great for large families. The reason for this menu, is the fact that most of these people are alone or just two of them. They cannot use a big turkey, and they don't cook much be- cause propane costs so money. So anybody that can help us we would be so glad for anything to make Thanks- giving great for our needy. Please drop off food Tuesdays or Thursdays at the Food Bank, corner of W. Cowell and Moon Mt. between 8am-1pm. Thank you, Carol Kelley.
