N 3, 2010 Coalition explained What is Quartzsite Community Prevention Coalition? The Quartzsite Community Prevention Coalition is a group of individuals from around the community, all striving for one common goal, prevention. This idea of prevention is sought out to reach a broad spectrum of people within the commu- nity. From young people reaching about middle school age, to the senior citizens living within our area, we as a group hope to reach out to each of these individuals and let them know exactly what substance abuse is and different ways to notice and hopefully prevent it. The coalition as a whole has many dif- ferent approaches towards different prob- lems that have been identified within our community. For example, many problems such as prescription drug abuse and al- cohol abuse have been found within the youth population in our community. The coalition’s approach to this problem is to hopefully educate parents and young teens about the consequences and the re- sults that doing these kind of things can have not only upon their life, but upon their body in the future. For example, getting caught with these kinds of substances as a minor, they may get in trouble with the law, which is not good, but making it a point to educate these teens that it has been proven that drinking before the age of 21 is not only illegal, but it also kills brain cells. On the other end of the spectrum it has also been brought to the community’s attention that the seniors living in our town are possibly trading drugs, doctor shopping, and seek- ing drugs from other people. These are all very serious problems that the coalition feels need to be addressed, so as of right now we have set up a permanent drug drop off site, which is located at the local Quartzsite Police Department. The coalition has been in effect for al- most two years now, but it has taken huge steps within the past year to make change within the community. The coalition’s mission statement is “To reduce or elimi- nate drug use in our youth & within our community.” Prevention is our number one goal and priority, and each day we hope to accomplish a little bit more, and slowly but surely reach our goal.
