Betty Crenshaw, Owner .DM. Acupuncture for Depression by Dr. Steven Cooner, OMD, PhD, LMT Depression is both a cause and result of chronic illness. Most chronically ill people are depressed, but it is not always possible to determine whether they became ill because they were depressed or became depressed because they were ill. Not all depressed people consider themselves sick. There are basically two types of depression — exogenous and endogenous. Exogenous depression results from factors in the external environment. Endogenous depression is caused by factors within the person’s body and may be independent of his or her life situation. Acupuncture can relieve feelings of depression, anxiety and insomnia, giving a person a sense of well- being and self-confidence. It is an effective substitute for sleeping pills, tranquilizers and anti-depressant medication. Many of these drugs have serious side effects when used to replace deficiencies of biochemical serotonin and dopamine in depressed patients. Acupuncture promotes normalization of body metabolism and stimulates the patient’s body to produce optimal amounts of the biochemicals it needs for good health. As the heavy, sad feeling of depression is relieved, a person feels more self-confident in his or her ability to cope with unpleasant aspects of life and make necessary changes. Acupuncture is a safe and effective way to relieve depression. It will not, of course, change the circumstances of a person’s life, but it will produce a feeling of well-being and relieve the insomnia that frequently accompanies depression. Since acupuncture does not have the side effects of anti-depressant drugs, electric shock or hormones, it is much safer and usually at least as effective. Acupuncture treatment for depression can be given along with treatment for any other symptoms. Solar project nixed, Quartz- site Solar still in the works LA PAZ COUNTY- At the September 20th meet- ing of the La Paz County Supervisors, La Paz County Community Development Director Scott Bernhard announced that the request for a special use permit for a solar power generating facility on Vicksburg Road has been withdrawn by the applicant. The plan was to build a large solar gen- erating plant on 160 acres near I-10 and Vicksburg Rd. A study showed the electrical infrastruc- ture near the facility could only handle 5 megawatts. The facility needs an output of 20 megawatts. The applicants paid for the study of the surrounding APS infrastructure. Realizing the cost would be prohibitive, the applicant withdrew the application. Quartzsite Solar Energy, LLC (QSE) proposes to construct a 100-MW (net), so- lar-powered electrical generation facility in La Paz County, Arizona. The proposed Project would be located approximately six miles north of Quartzsite, and adjacent to Arizona State Route 95. The proposed Project, powerline and ancillary facilities would be on BLM administered land. The proposed project would use concen- trating solar “power tower” technology to capture the sun’s heat to make steam, which would power traditional steam tur- bine generators. The solar power facility would contain the power block, a central receiver or tower, solar fields which con- sist of mirrors or heliostats to reflect the sun’s energy to the central tower, a ther- mal energy storage system, technical and non-technical buildings, a stormwater system, water supply and treatment sys- tems, a wastewater system, and other supporting facilities. QSE has applied to Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) to interconnect the proposed Project to Western’s transmission system.
