P 2 DESERT MESSENGER IS A PROUD MEMBER OF .DM. They must often change, who would be constant in happiness or wisdom. Confucius Just Rambling... by Elmer London It’s refreshing that Quartzsite has a council with honorable goals and objectives. It’s sad, the backers and followers of the mayor, make the goals so difficult to achieve. Hats off to our Police Department and all of the town staff. They serve our needs admirably... under stresses we’ll never know. Brought to you by Elmer London & Desert Messenger Quartzsite is an amazing community! Quartzsite has constantly been changing since the “good ol’ days”. I often hear how it was better back then. Growing up, I also heard that from my grandpar- ents who told me of “days gone by”. I’ve heard some folks wish to see Quartzsite as it was 30 years ago. My grandfather wanted to see his life as it was 30 years previously, too. He did not like change and often complained about it. It seems some folks are never content being in the moment. Sometimes, those of us not happy in our lives, need something to complain about. It was so at the Quartzsite Country Bash on Saturday night. Some would see it as a bust, because there were not thousands of people there. However, the turnout was great for a first time event! Those of us that were in attendance enjoyed the peace and harmony in our community. There was very little talk of how bad things are. We just sat on the green grass enjoying a good concert, talking with friends, watch- ing the children play in a safe environ- ment, being in the moment. Oh, the days gone by...can be here at any moment, as quickly as changing our minds about how we think about things. Seeing happy people sharing a beautiful night of good music, food, and friendship brought home the “good ol’ days”! Many folks forget that Quartzsite is a full time town, with families raising children, working at full time jobs, dealing with everything any other small town has to deal with. Parents just want the best for their kids, and work hard for that op- portunity. Speaking of opportunity, the Scholars’ Academy educators are providing many opportunites for their students. The new football team is awesome! The next home game is Friday, Oct. 8th at 7pm at Town Park. You won’t want to miss this game! The Stars are undefeated and even the town coucil members announced that at their recent meeting. The new coaches are creating an atmosphere of hope for our young people. With their strong sense of discipline and supportive caring, our young people have something to work towards in their lives! Look at the west side of town! There’s lots of changes taking place there! Evi- dently, business owners are feeling the hope in the air, as growth and upgrading to buildings is occuring. Vendors, who SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR OUR TEAMS! NOW OPEN! O 6, 2010 Editorial BY SHANANA “RAIN” GOLDEN-BEAR complain year after year, are returning... go figure! Some have moved to “greener pastures”, while others know that there is something about Quartzsite and the people here. After the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Scenic Road RV Park, owner Shawn shared that it was the community that drew her husband and her to this town. She said, not just the town’s people, but the people in the park that have been coming to Quartzsite, some for 20 years! This sense of community is what many of us were drawn to. You gotta admit, there’s something unique about Quartzsite. Whether you stay a day, the season, or the whole year, there’s just something special here! The first night I stayed out in the desert, some folks walking by stopped to help out with setting up the satellite dish. And then there was that rainbow, that great symbol of change and promise, that welcomed me to this great location in the Sonoran Desert. One can accept change with serenity, or fight it all the way. Some may say I’m naive. I say, I am happy and at peace. There is a difference. That little song comes to mind, “If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands...” Are you smiling yet? I’ve got a challenge for folks: show how happy you are by waving to each other, residents, visitors, business owners, and even those loud nay-sayers! Smile to the stranger walking down the street. And don’t forget to attend the football game on Friday night and show your support for the team!
