O 6, 2010 Past and Present of Red Ribbon Week Submitted by: Samantha Hess Quartzsite Community Prevention Coalition Red Ribbon Week became a nation- ally recognized holiday in 1988, af- ter drug enforcement agent, Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was kidnapped and brutally murdered in 1985.In the be- ginning Red Ribbon Week was sim- ply recognized by his home town of Calexico, CA, but after a short while word of this killing and newly adopted dedication week got to the president of the United States, who at the time was Ronald Regan, he claimed it to be a nationally recognized holiday, with himself and his wife Nancy as the first honorary chairs. A brief history on Red Ribbon Week and why we actually celebrate it, pro- vides the general public with a little more appreciation of the week. We are actually celebrating the life of a man who fought against drugs, alcohol, and violence, so in us celebrating Red Rib- bon week we are showing that com- munities are still in the fight against illegal substances, and also honoring this mans life and what he did for the United States. .DM. Red Ribbon Week Oct. 23-31 The Quartzsite Community Preven- tion Coalition feels that this is a very important week and there fore we will be set up at Tyson Wells on October 23rd. We will have guest speakers, hot dogs and drinks, and we are hoping to even get a drug dog presentation there as well. Reducing drugs and substance abuse within the community is one of our main projects, and getting the community together for events like this helps to show that they as well feel that we should be working together to form a cleaner, more healthy commu- nity. We would love for you all to join us on the 23rd to show your support for a drug free community. “Today, Red Ribbon Week brings mil- lions of people together to raise aware- ness regarding the need for alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention, early intervention, and treatment services. It is the largest, most visible awareness campaign ob- served annually in the United States.” (redribboncoalition.com) We would love for you and your families to come out and join our local coalition in our fight to rid the community of drugs. Hope to see you all there!
