Best Use of Local Tax Dollars Festival Park www.ci.fayetteville.nc.us Every community has to have a rallying point, a meeting place. And for Fayetteville residents that place has become Festival Park. It’s a place where families can gather on blankets, kids can run and play frisbee or football while their parents chat, and great music whether it’s country, rock or the sounds of our very own Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra can fl oat through the air. Up & Coming Weekly readers concur that Festival Park is one of the best uses of local tax dollars. Apparently our readers did, as they voted the United Way the Best Local Non-Profi t. For those not in the know, the United Way isn’t a service provider, instead it is a funding agency that serves as a clearing house for charitable donations within the community. Once the annual campaign is complete, the agency funds the various programs of our community non-profi ts to ensure that they can meet the needs of the community. The tireless work of the volunteers who knock on doors, make call phones and get people to open their wallets to give during the annual campaign is what makes the agency a success, and those people are your neighbors, your friends, and could even be you! In the community teams of volunteers serve by performing blood pressure checks, serving communion, singing in nursing homes, laundromat ministry and casserole ministry. It’s been that way for quite some time, although Kirby has called Fayetteville home a lot longer than Bowman. Kirby has worked at the Fayetteville Observer since 1971 in many capacities. He currently writes columns about people and places in the Cape Fear region, and has a blog at http://blogs.fayobserver.com/kirby called The Gospel Truth, I Think. Kirby has quite a following and was voted Best Local Columnist/Writer by Up & Coming Weekly readers. Congrats, Bill.
