ARTS A Best Gallery/Art Venue The Arts Council 301 Hay St. 910.323.1776 www.theartscouncil.com Since 1973 the Arts Council has supported the core values of excellence, accountability, transparency, collaboration and innovation. It also values highly individual creativity, cultural preservation, economic development and lifelong learning through the arts. With so many values and up standing principles you must think that the organization is serious about what it does and the answer is yes, it is. The Arts Council is the primary source of funding for art and culture in the region and in 2008-2009 supplied more than $550,000 in direct funding to artist, art, schools and other agencie. It supplies opportunities such as grants and employment for local artists and is just a huge part in the community. The organization “serves as a key resource in making Cumberland County a good place to live, work and visit,” for more than 300,000 citizens. You can catch a new art exhibit in their gallery space most every 4th Friday. Everything from public works, to cultural expressions, and even performance art is the norm at Fayetteville’s best gallery. Best Movie Theater Millstone 14 3400 Footbridge Ln., Fayetteville 910.354.2124 www.stonetheatres.com Brand new, sparkly and shiny, the Millstone 14 Movie Theater opened this year in Hope Mills with much fanfare, and things haven’t slowed down since day one. Drive by any weekend and the parking lot is fi lled with cars almost to the point of overfl owing. Could it be the 14 screens? The 42” high- back leather rockers on 21” risers that are so comfy and relaxing? Or maybe the Dolby Digital 3D and Digital Sound delivering super sharp pictures and top-notch sound effects in every showing? Maybe, but the expanded concessions serving nachos, pizza, hot dogs and the like in addition to the bad-for-you-but-oh-so-delicious popcorn and the rear window captioning for the hearing impaired don’t hurt either. Best Video Rental Blockbuster www.blockbuster.com With several locations around Fayetteville, Blockbuster is the Best Video Rental Store in town. Keeping up with the times, Blockbuster Video offers Get it Now and On Demand features that keep the video rental pioneer chain relevant and in the video rental game. They’ve got videos, and they’ve got games — comparable with the most current gaming systems. If you’re old school about media rentals, stop by one of their stores. Otherwise, a visit to www.blockbuster.com opens up a world of convenient and entertaining media options. Best Place for Family Entertainment Fun, Fun, Fun 3729 Sycamore Dairy Road Fayetteville 910.864.1307 4670 Cumberland Road Hope Mills 910.487.8585 www.gofunfunfun.com Well, the name says it all. It is open seven days a week, including holidays. If you are looking to make the kids smile, a trip to Fun, Fun, Fun will surely do the trick. Pack up the kids and head on over to Fun, Fun, Fun and enjoy and afternoon of entertainment. Best Local Band Tonic Immobility www.facebook.com Coming out of nowhere, Tonic Immobility was voted Fayetteville’s best local band. They can be found at The Backdoor Bar and Grill, Blue Moon Cafe and Via 216. This band consists of Connor Day as the lead guitarist and Dustin Day as the lead vocalist. They take their inspiration from the ‘90s alternative rock scene. Best Local Musician Chris Hurst www.myspace.com/chrishurst+1980 Chris Hurst can be found at many venues in the Fayetteville music scene. He recently played at the Karen Chandler Trust and Team Daniel fundraiser, and he’s a regular at Lido’s (where we celebrated our Best of Fayetteville winners). In fact he was the entertainment for the evening at our Best of Fayetteville Party. Huske Hardware (our Best Dance Club, Best DJ, Best Club Overall and Best local Bartender winner) features Hurst as does Morgan’s Chop House. A native of Fayetteville, his music is rooted in blues and blends timeless covers and innovative original music. With that kind of exposure and natural talent, no wonder he’s been voted Fayetteville’s best local musician. Best Club Overall, Best Dance Club, Best Club DeeJay, Best Bartender Huske Hardware House 405 Hay St., Fayetteville 910.437.9905 www.huskehardware.com For more than 105 years, Huske Hardware House has been a part of downtown Fayetteville. It began as an actual Hardware House, pretty much an old-time Home Depot, but closed after 67 years. The building has been used for all sorts of things since then, but in 1996 it was restored by Dr. William Baggett. It is now the only downtown brewery, restaurant and live-entertainment venue. The restaurant has six unique custom draft beers, and often hold events such as karaoke, “Huske Unplugged” and ‘80s night. On Friday and Saturday the real fun begins when Fayetteville’s best DJ, Tommy King, starts spinning and the city’s beautiful people start dancing (now you know why they won Best Dance Club). With live music in the offing as well, Huske Hardware is an even more attractive place to spend your evenings. Of course, you can’t forget the man behind the taps, Scott Schneider, who has quite the following and garnered the title of Best Bartender. With all of those great things going for it, it’s no surprise that the restaurant won the title Best Club Overall. NIGHT LIFE N 20 BEST OF FAYETTEVILLE SEPTEMBER 8-14, 2010 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM
