Museum of the Cape Fear Hosts Two Events a STAFF REPORT The Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex announces the return of the Festival of Yesteryear. This free event on Saturday, Sept.11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. offers something for all ages. This year’s festival focuses on the colonial era in America, and entertainment will include storytelling, a Punch and Judy puppet show, and music presented by members of UNC-Chapel Hill’s Music Department. Children and adults can become “certified” apprentices to craftsmen in the make-and-take craft area. In the demonstration section, watch other trades under way, such as blacksmithing, cooking and soap making. Stop by the country doctor booth to discover what medical treatments were like during colonial times. Then march over to where reenactors are gathered to hear cannons roar and watch the Stars and Stripes soar. Food vendors will be present, and be sure to bring your camera for plenty of photo opportunities, including taking your picture in colonial-era stocks! This year’s Festival of Yesteryear is presented in conjunction with Fayetteville’s Lafayette 250, a commemoration of the 250th birthday of the Marquis de Lafayette and the democratic ideals of the man for whom Fayetteville is named. The Lafayette 250 Committee is coordinating several public events from Friday to Sunday, Sept. 10 to 12, including a free birthday celebration on Sept. 11. If you’d like to have a great time while learning about Fayetteville during the colonial era, come to the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex, and let the Festival of Yesteryear be your gateway to history. Have you ever wanted to compete on a quiz show like “Jeopardy?” Well, the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex will give you a similar opportunity at the third annual North Carolina Quiz Bowl on Thursday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. Sign up as a contestant to show off your knowledge of the Tar Heel State, or come and watch the competition. The event is FREE to contestants and spectators. The North Carolina Quiz Bowl is patterned after the museum’s popular Civil War Quiz Bowl. The Sept. 23 event is limited to 20 participants, and contestants can preregister by calling 486-1330. Registration will also be available at the door and will continue until all 20 slots are filled. Contestants of all ages are welcome. There are two age divisions: 17 and over and 16 and under. Prizes will be awarded to the winner of each age division! The North Carolina Quiz Bowl is a great way for participants and spectators to learn about the state. Categories will include favorites such as the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, sports, and the 20th century, as well as new additions such as famous North Carolina women and North Carolina geography. The Quiz Bowl promises a family-friendly, educational evening of North Carolina history. The event also gives new residents a fun way to discover more about their new state.
