This mistake made probably more than thirty years ago, resulted in a destroyed structure, danger, and many man hours by the Town of Parker Public Works Department. The tree that fell during the weekend storm was a sucker, as were the other three suckers that either died or were topped within ten feet or so of the ground. The trunk of the felled tree is still visible in the center of the cluster. This is an expensive and dangerous way to be able to talk about not allowing suckers to grow. When a tree dies or is felled and a sucker emerges sometimes the thought is that a free tree is growing. Not so. The best thing to do is remove the stump. If this is not affordable or possible, the next best thing to do is to cut off any suckers that sprout. It is easy then-and safe. Some trees don't sucker easily, some not at all, but if they do, save yourself all kinds of potential problems and remove all suckers. If another tree is desired in that location, plant one. We are happy to discuss any plant questions you might have. Feel free to call the Extension office 928 669-9843, or stop by at 2524 Mutahar, just off Shay Road in Parker, Arizona.
