Lyle Browning Cooperative Extension Instructional Specialist By this time of year most landscape plants are feeling the cumulative stress of our long, hot summer. Following are some suggestions for helping plants get thru the summer. • Avoid over watering plants. Water displaces oxygen and plant roots must have oxygen to survive. • Look at your plants in the morning. If the leaves are not wilted the plant probably does not need water. • Afternoon wilting is what plants do to reduce transpo-evaporation. • When watering plants, make sure the water reaches plant roots. Trees require more water than shrubs or turf; they just don't need water as often. • Try to avoid fertilizing during the hottest months. The plants are just like us. They just want to get thru the summer without being forced to do more than just survive. Most of the turf in our landscapes will be either Bermuda grass or St. Augustine and both like hot weather. Just remember, the more you fertilize more water is required and the turf will need to be mowed more often. It is not much fun to cut grass at over one hundred degrees. Following these suggestions should help you and your plants have a more pleasant summer. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us. Our telephone number is 928 669-9843 and out office is located on 2524 Mutahar - just off Shey Road in Parker. We are always happy to talk with you.
