CUCKOOS FROM PAGE 15 es used to be plentiful and it wasn't unusual to find a normally elusive Gila monster hanging around our beehives to snatch up a honeybee full of nectar. Year round, we had enjoyed an amazing variety of birds from the tiny hummingbirds to the giant turkey vultures. And among the paloverde, mesquite, and ironwood trees that lined the dry washes it wasn't unusual to see small bands of wild horses, burros, desert mule deer, and the magnificent bighorn sheep. For decades, our family enjoyed the antics of various roadrunners and all the other desert wildlife that shared our space. As more and more people learned about the joy of living in Quartzsite, the roadrunners moved deeper into the vast, quiet open spaces of the desert. By 1962, our five-acre spread had been cut in half by Interstate 10 with its four lanes of wide tires, windshields, and noise that took a toll on many of the critters that had occupied this part of the Sonoran Even though many of these wondesert for eons. derful critters have moved out to more-open spaces, I know the Less frequently seen were cotton- roadrunners are out there sailtail and jackrabbits, horny toads ing and darting about still amusand chuckwallas, ringtail cats, kan- ing anyone who catches a glimpse garoo rats, ground squirrels, as well of their comical behavior.
